Erando González, one of Mexico’s finest stage and screen actors, has been wowing audiences in Mexico City and other places with his virtuoso, one-man adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III. On Saturday, October 5, at 7pm, two firsts are going to happen: González is bringing his Richard III to the San Miguel Playhouse; and his mostly Spanish-language show will be performed for the very first time with projected supertitles in English.

The show is a production of La Troupe México, the San Miguel-based theater company that uses bilingual theater to help unite our Mexican and expatriate communities. La Troupe’s previous productions were The Madres, last August, and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, in 2017, both presented in Spanish with English supertitles.

North American moviegoers may have seen González in El Mago, the 2004 Mexican film for which he won the Mayahuel Award for Best Actor. In the U.S., he is perhaps better known for playing the bad guy opposite Christian Slater in the amusing but slight 2012 Hollywood action film El Gringo.

A theater critic for the Mexico City newspaper Correo had this to say about a 2014 performance of the one-man Richard III: “González held the audience spellbound with his every movement, word and sound.”
