Despite its serious topic, this film is hysterical! Every stereotype of the typical (Mexican) Jewish family is addressed. You don’t want to miss this opportunity for fun and reminiscence.
Spanish with English subtitles (There’s even some Yiddish!)
My Mexican Shiva is about how the death of a man results in the celebration of his life. According to Jewish belief, from the moment a Jew is born, he or she is accompanied by two angels: an angel of light and an angel of darkness. With the passing of Moishe, his family and friends gather in Mexico City to sit shivah, the 7-day Jewish mourning ritual. The spirit angels, Aleph and Bet, divine accountants, only visible to the camera, watch over the family and calculate which angel will accompany Moishe’s soul to the afterlife. The odds are against Moishe from the beginning. Which angel will win the battle for Moishe’s soul? If the shivah reveals anything, it’s that Moishe’s family and friends loved him with all his flaws and mystery- and most of all his spirit.
Popcorn and soft drinks will be served during the film. Afterwards, stay to enjoy some traditional holiday snacks: (kosher) tamales, atole, pan de muerto, etc. prepared by chef Zajar Campos
People are just dying to register for this event, so please make your reservations soon! This event will fill up.

CHESMA, A.C.(una “Comunidad Hebrea En San Miguel de Allende, Asociacion Civil”) is an interdenominational Jewish community in San Miguel de Allende, State of Guanajuato, Mexico. We have about 120 members: one-quarter are Mexican, the rest expatriates primarily from the United States and Canada. Our motto–‘One community, many journeys’–reflects our diverse backgrounds—in language, culture, and observance. We welcome each member to express his or her unique Judaism. Be it secularly, artistically, religiously, intellectually or otherwise, we urge all Jews who are interested in being a part of a Jewish entity here in el Bajío to join with us. CHESMA, AC is a not-for-profit umbrella organization, which remains unaffiliated with any specific Jewish movement; our lay members lead worship and fill all the other roles needed keep the community thriving. Under this umbrella, the Traditional/Egalitarian Minyan Group, led primarily by Dan Lessner and Carole Stone, has just been accepted for membership in the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (North America’s Conservative Judaism flagship), and is now a separate legal religious entity known as “Kehilla Shalom San Miguel de Allende” under IRS section 501(c)(3).
