Travel back in time and hear the classic Motown songs of Diana Ross and The Supremes.

Diana Ross (born March 26, 1944) is an American singer, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Ross rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group The Supremes, who during the 1960s became Motown’s most successful act, and are the best-charting female group in US history, as well as one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time. The group released a record-setting twelve number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, and “Love Child”.

Following her departure from the Supremes in 1970, Ross continued a successful solo career with hit singles “Theme from Mahogany, “Love Hangover”, “Upside Down” and “Endless Love.”

Ross has also ventured into acting, with performances in Lady Sings the Blues (1972), Mahogany (1975), The Wiz (1978) and Out of Darkness (1994).

This is a musical history program where we will provide the historical context of various aspects of Diana Ross, The Supremes, and the Motown Sound, with emphasis on pop culture (as opposed to music theory) followed by a video recording of each of the selections.

The historical items will be provided via pictures and video so viewing the presentation is recommended, but you are also free to just listen to the music via audio only.

Motown Records is an American record label founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in 1959. Its name, a blend of motor and town, has become a nickname for Detroit, where the label was originally headquartered.

Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music as an African American-owned label that achieved crossover success. In the 1960s, Motown and its subsidiary labels were the most successful proponents of the Motown Sound, a style of soul music with a mainstream pop appeal. During the 1960s, Motown achieved 79 records in the top-ten of the Billboard Hot 100 between 1960 and 1969.
