San Miguel Writers’ Conference Presents Richard Blanco, Geraldine Brooks, Lawrence Wright, Diana Gabaldon, Emma Donoghue

     By Susan Page

One of the most beloved and talked-about keynote addresses the Writers’ Conference ever presented was by Obama’s inaugural poet, the beloved Richard Blanco. He is returning to the Conference stage, this time online, on December 6 at 6:00 PM in an interview with his publisher, Helen Atwan, long-time Director of Beacon Press. On that evening, the Conference is giving away fourteen copies of Blanco’s book, How to Love a Country. You could be a lucky recipient!

In anticipation of this event, the Poetry Café will present an evening with Richard Blanco on November 30 at 5:00 PM. Pre-register at sanmiguelliterarysala.org. Don’t miss two opportunities to spend time with this celebrated poet, memoirist, and riveting public speaker.

    Geraldine Brooks and Lawrence Wright

On December 13, you have the opportunity to attend an historic conversation between two Pulitzer Prize winning authors, Geraldine Brooks and Lawrence Wright. Both of these authors have star-studded careers as writers and both have written novels about pandemics. This promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Geraldine Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for her remarkable novel, March. Lawrence Wright’s new novel about a pandemic, The End of October, is “a maniacal page-turner, a sweeping, authoritative, and genuinely intelligent thriller that reads as if it’s been shot out of a cannon,” according to the NYTimes. Wright may be best known for his widely acclaimed book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, which won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and was made into a series for Hulu.

    Opportunities to Network

If you miss December 13, it will be recorded. However, if you can, attend when it is scheduled, because one of the best feature of these online interviews is that you have the opportunity to “go up on stage” after the presentation for a personal chat with the authors. Attendees have raved about these informal Q and A and chat sessions, and that part is not recorded. Or, also after the event, if you want to network with others who have attended, you are welcome to join the line for the bathroom!

    Book to Film Forum

Make December 13 a literary day on your calendar, because in the afternoon at 2:00, we are presenting a not-to-be-missed forum with Diana Gabaldon (Outlander), Emma Donoghue (Room), A’Lelia Bundles (Netflix Series Self Made), and Maria Carter (Rebel).  This gathering of celebrities will take us through the excitement and challenges of turning a book into movie, with their widely varied experiences.

New Keynote Package and Holiday Sale

We are excited to announce a valuable new Keynote Package: All thirteen star-studded keynote events, a $345 usd value for only $180 usd, including recordings of events that have already occurred. And our Holiday Sale offers three writing skills workshops for the price of two.
