Two Experts Talk on The Obrador Presidency and the Immigration Debate

    By Susan Page

We have an exceptional opportunity to hear two leading experts on Mexico’s challenges and prospects for success, all in the same educational evening. Two highly respected, multi-award-wining journalists, both of whom have captivated San Miguel audiences before, will present an in-depth look at Obrador’s promises and chances for success and on the controversial topic of immigration.

    Alfredo Corchado

Alfredo Corchado Jiménez is an award-winning Mexican-American journalist and author who has covered Mexico for many years and is currently the Mexico City bureau chief for the Dallas Morning News. He specializes in covering the drug cartels and the U.S. Mexico border, organized crime, corruption, and the spread of the drug cartels into U.S. cities. He has been called, “the top American journalist covering Mexico today” whose “knowledge of the Mexican political system, the drug trade, and modern Mexican society is without parallel.” He is the author of the eye-openingbook, Midnight in Mexico.

Corchado’s new book is entitled Homelands: Four Friends, Two Countries, and the Fate of the Great Mexican-American Migration. According to Publisher’s Weekly, the book “provides historical context for the current debate on immigration, and illuminates the very heart of the polarizing immigration debate that is roiling America today.”

    Carlos Bravo Regidor

People who heard Carlos Bravo’s last presentation here in San Miguel, for Democrats Abroad, are still talking about the way he brought clarity and understanding to the complex challenges facing Mexico today. His deep knowledge of Mexican politics gives him the ability to offer a sophisticated and informed perspective the Obrador presidency, Obrador’s strengths and weaknesses, his promises and the likelihood the he will be able to fulfill them. Will Obrador be able to make a dent in Mexico’s entrenched corruption? Will he be able to hold together the loose coalition that is his new Moreno party? How will he finance his social programs? How will he achieve education reform while appeasing the strong teachers union?

Bravo is a professor, journalist, and the research coordinator for a prominent think tank called the Center for Economic Research and Teaching. He is a superb speaker, whose well-organized and accessible talk is sure to be the subject of conversations for weeks to come.
