“Formerly it was different -said doña Maria Morales-, there weren´t fancy parades or monumental offerings on main square and those were not crowded days as now”.
Come to this interesting talk offered by Professor Jesus Rodríguez a Sanamiguelense researcher to be introduced in the local way to celebrate all souls day and day of the dead by local people, talking from the otomi inheritors and their particular way to prepare private altars at home dedicate to their “animas” or souls of the ancestors with the deep believe they are coming to stay with them one day, which is the reason they take great care on preparing offerings composed of dead´s bread, water, pulque, zotol and mirasol flowers, a cross and of course the picture of the guest.
Professor Rodríguez is going to explain about the types of offerings used by locals, the time to dedicate them for children and those for adults, the meaning of the elements people offer such candles, cempazuchitl, xotol and mirasol flowers, alfeñique candies, the picture of the person, clothes, shoes, blankets and others.
Let’s learn about the way to celebrate these festivities by the San Miguel´s families, the former way they used to wait for the coming of the souls with respect and solemnity, how the local families going holly mass on November 1st. or 2nd. visit the cemeteries to prepare a beautiful offering and after pray the rosary they back home.
This lecture is the base to understand the diverse activities happening in the city during “Dia de Muertos” and tell the difference between those who are traditional from San Miguel and those who has been introduced along the time and anyway give this delicious flavor to the best city of the world.
