How are the legendary civilizations of ancient Mexico connected to their North American descendants? Join PEN on Tuesday, Feb 18, at 6:30 PM in the second-floor auditorium of the Bellas Artes to hear Texas writer, journalist and documentary filmmaker John Philip Santos discuss this profound question in “Ancestral Journeys to Now: Searching for Our Connections to Ancient Mexico”“The last fifty years,” Santos says, “have been a golden age in Mexican archaeology.” Excavations at Mayan, Teotihuacan, Toltec, Chichimeca and Aztec sites “have immeasurably advanced our understanding of ancient Mexico. Other developments have provided a kind of ‘Rosetta Stone’ of the mythic imagination shared by many of the indigenous peoples of pre-contact Mexico.”
Santos will “explore how these discoveries, and the work of scholars, archaeologists and creatives in Mexico and the United States, help us to illuminate the profound connections between ancient Mexico and the Mexican(x) now—and what these connections may reveal about our future.”
Santos’s two memoirs, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation (a National Book Award finalist) and The Farthest Home is in an Empire of Fire, tell the ancestral stories of his family, an American origin story involving Spain, Mexico, and the lands that became South Texas. His book of poems is Songs Older Than Any Known Singer.
An Emmy-nominated television producer, Santos has produced more than 40 documentaries and news programs for CBS and PBS. His journalism and commentary have appeared in such publications as the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Manchester Guardian and Texas Monthly.
Santos, the first Latino Rhodes Scholar, holds degrees from Oxford University and Notre Dame. He is currently University Distinguished Scholar in Mestizo Cultural Studies in the Honors College at the University of Texas San Antonio. In 2017 he was awarded the Texas Medal for the Arts in Literature.

Solo conectar: el México antiguo y sus herederos norteamericanos

¿Cómo se conectan las legendarias civilizaciones del México antiguo con sus descendientes norteamericanos? Únase al PEN el martes 18 de febrero a las 6:30p.m. en el auditorio del segundo piso de Bellas Artes para escuchar al escritor, periodista y documentalista de Texas, John Philip Santos, discutir esta profunda pregunta en “Viajes ancestrales hasta ahora: buscando nuestras conexiones con el México antiguo”.
“Los últimos cincuenta años”, dice Santos, “han sido una época dorada para la arqueología mexicana”. Excavaciones en los sitios mayas, teotihuacanos, toltecas, chichimecas y aztecas “han incrementado nuestro entendimiento del México antiguo. Otros avances han proporcionado una especie de ‘Piedra Rosetta’ de la imaginación mítica compartida por muchos de los pueblos indígenas del México precolombino”.
Santos “explorará cómo estos descubrimientos, y el trabajo de académicos, arqueólogos y creativos en México y Estados Unidos, nos ayudan a iluminar las profundas conexiones entre el México antiguo y la población mexicana actual, y lo que estas conexiones pueden revelar sobre nuestro futuro”.
Las dos memorias de Santos, Sitios que quedaron inconclusos al momento de la creación (un finalista del Premio Nacional del Libro) y El hogar más lejano está en un imperio de fuego, cuentan las historias ancestrales de su familia, una historia americana de origen que involucra a España, México y el territorio que se convertiría en el sur de Texas. Su libro de poemas se llama Canciones más antiguas que cualquier cantante conocido.
Un productor de televisión nominado al Emmy, Santos ha producido más de 40 documentales y programas de noticias para CBS y PBS. Su periodismo y comentarios han aparecido en publicaciones como el New York Times, Los Angeles Times, el Manchester Guardian y Texas Monthly.
Santos, el primer latino en obtener la beca Rhodes, posee títulos de la Universidad de Oxford y Notre Dame. Actualmente es académico universitario distinguido en Estudios de mestizaje cultural en la Honors College de la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio. En 2017 fue galardonado con la Medalla de Texas para las Artes en Literatura.
