  • Beginning July 23rd, CASA A.C. will be holding an 8-session “social circus” workshop for members from 16 to 46 years old of the LGBTQ+ community in the greater-San Miguel de Allende area. This workshop is part of a larger effort by the CASA Community Health Program (PSC) initiative called Colores SMA, which is a campaign dedicated to building a robust and inclusive local community for LGBTQ+ people.

“Social circus” is the strategy of using circus arts as tools for addressing social challenges. It was first introduced by Cirque du Monde, the social service arm of the international circus production company Cirque du Soleil. Through learning how to spin plates or build a human pyramid, workshop participants build relationships and self-confidence.

The workshop will be facilitated by Guanajuato-based social circus non-profit organization Machincuepa Circo Social A.C. Machincuepa was founded in 1999 in collaboration with Cirque du Monde, to use the social circus strategy to address issues affecting young people of Mexico such as violence in schools and gender discrimination. Machincuepa’s untraditional strategy has allowed them to get close to young people and begin conversations about otherwise hard-to-discuss subjects.

The upcoming circus workshop will be held fully in Spanish at CASA’s Santa Julia headquarters from 2:00-6:00pm on Saturdays. Sign-up commits you to all 8 sessions, over the course of which you will learn basic circus tricks alongside other members of the LGBTQ+ community from the SMA area. The workshop is free, but signup is limited to 25 people. If you’re interested, sign up now!
