After three years of visiting to give workshops in San Miguel, Stephen Billick has now founded The San Miguel Institute of Photography. Our next 5-week course is beginning Tues. February 11th.

The curriculum is designed to create a fluency in the language manual photography in order to create sophisticated images written in light, space & time. & having created this fluency, the student is then free to “speak” it in any way they seem fit. Meaning, we are not specifically addressing how to shoot architecture. Or how to shoot a portrait. Or how to shoot photojournalistically. But instead teaching a deep fundamental understanding of the medium, allowing you to then access any path forward you desire.

We will thoroughly explore exposure strategies, the ways in which you can manipulate layers of space with your lens, & how to deal with action & movement with your shutter. The course will also clarify all of the technical aspects of your equipment, as well as touching on theories of composition, elements of art history, & discussing personal style + intent. A second Photo 2 advanced course will follow in the fall for those interested. We are slowly building a community of graduates who are participating in meet-ups, group shoots, &, soon, gallery showings.

Who should take this?
This class is designed for people with no previous knowledge of the medium, so beginners should feel entirely welcome. However, students with more advanced needs are also encouraged to take the course, as it will quickly expand to include truly advanced methods. Also, if a class has to be missed we will have scheduled makeup sessions.
