Community Cineteca / Cinematheque – Showing films by Director´s Filmography
4x semana/week en San Miguel de Allende
Arriba De Mercado Sano en la Ancha de San Antonio
“I’m a filmmaker. I have the face of a gringo because my parents are from NY, but I grew up here in San Miguel until I was 16 years old; then I went abroad to study and work for a while and during the pandemic, when I returned to San Miguel, I realized the cultural gap that exists with respect to cinema. That’s when I started with the Tecolote project,” Sky Richards begins to tell me about his film project El Tecolote and the way it came about.
The space is located on the second floor of the Mercado Sano, on the Exit to Celaya and is a real corner that, even for people like me who do not know much (or almost nothing) about cinema, looks exciting. The room has 21 seats, you will surely appreciate that it has air conditioning and excellent sound quality to enjoy the movies in a big way.
The genius of this cinema lies in… Where to start? It could be because importance is given to cult films that you will hardly find on platforms or commercial cinemas, showing cinema in retrospect with both Mexican and foreign directors such as Carlos Regada, for example, so that people know his filmography and his magnificent work and get out of that comfort zone that even in entertainment exists.
“I made this space so that people can discover something outside of Netflix, we are cornered by an American film culture that has nothing to do with the reflection and introspection that is possible in cinema, because, what content do we consume?: People more beautiful than you, having a more beautiful life than yours and living it in a more interesting way than you, when our lives are really very complex and very interesting as we are, we should celebrate that: the simplicity and reflection of everyday life. With that idea we share films in which you can bounce your own ideas and reflect your own life, “explains Sky, and while doing so he overflows, gets excited and it is fascinating to get a slight glimpse of the way in which he perceives the magic of cinema.
Three performances are screened per day, four days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm; tickets cost 100 pesos and include popcorn, as well as a discount on the Mercado Sano café in case you crave a drink. Sky invites our readers to be surprised, to come and enjoy films that they do not know and that are important for our era because they are pushing the borders of cinema that, after all, is one of the seven fine arts.
