I wanted to share one of my favorite places in San Miguel. This cozy and delicious cafe on Codo, near Coppel, is called Verintort, and has wonderful blintzes (sweet and not sweet), borsht, and amazing pastries. My favorite blintzes are chicken and mushroom, and my favorite desert is the Napoleon tort, which has just the right (and slight) touch of sweetness.
The owner, Vera, informed me that there is a 2×1 special on blintzes for the month of July. The promotion is available Tues-Sat from 9-3pm and Sundays from 10-3pm.
The cafe is open Tues-Sat 9am-7pm and Sundays from 10am-5pm (after 3pm, you can get pastries and coffee).
This gem is definitely worth visiting!

There are some wonderful bakeries in San Miguel de Allende. Each has different specialties.

The Verintort bakery made a wonderful birthday cake for us last week. It was chocolate, and it was made with a light touch, not too sweet, and very velvety.

Everyone commented on the different taste, and I believe they use better quality shortening than some other bakeries, and I know they have some cakes made with honey. This one was just less sweet than a normal cake, but I am not sure of the sweetener. It was decorated elegantly as well.

The bakery is owned by a Ukraine woman ( or family) and it is charming. At the moment they are doing two for one breakfast, featuring Vera’s special crepes. There is lovely art in the space as well. \It is quite small, just a few tables, and a nice intimate space.

Give it try! They have a website.
Please don’t ask me about their hours, etc., just contact them.

This place really is wonderful. I cook and I wouldn’t even attempt the desserts these ladies make: really lovely food – light cream, puff pastries. And they have this marshmallow Carmel cake thing that is amazing (even though those words together sound anything but delicious)….I think I got frustrated once because they didn’t take credit cards and the verbal delivery was a little abrupt: but it’s Russian, translated to Spanish, translated to English: i.e. a gift. I went back and paid a day or two later – and that in itself says something quite sweet about the place: it’s a neighborhood joint that trusts you to return to pay for beautiful pastries: or they accept you won’t.
In any case, the pastries were lovely.

Walking past Verintort on a recent weekday I spied from the street mountainous-looking cupcakes in the display case. I bought a dozen on the spot for an upcoming birthday celebration. But I also took notice of the other scrumtious looking cakes and pastries in the same case. I returned two days later to purchase two pieces of Vera’s butter cream icing drenched cakes.

There are many great cake bakeries in San Miguel and this is one of them. But Vera’s is much more. I say this because on this second visit, I finally lifted my eyes from the display case to see a full menu high on the wall in front of me. I took note of many of the items on this menu because it’s been years since I’d enjoyed borscht, pirogies and blintzes.

I returned with a friend a week later to have lunch. He had the chicken blintzes and a potatoe pirogie and I ate a dish (can’t remember the name) with ground beef & pork meat loaves covered in a savory sauce and served with mashed potatoes. We both agreed this place is our newest “food find” in San Miguel and “tentatively” put Verintort on our “A” lists.

We both will return–frequently, for food like this.
Hours are 9am – 6:30pm daily (I only wish Vera would stay open for late dinner)
And, Vera is also now serving Kefir!
