In the countryside outside of San Miguel de Allende (on the way to Jalpa), we are a vineyard, tasting room, family eco-treat and country barbecue. We promote sustainable tourism and Mexican wines.

Renee and I spent a delightful date afternoon yesterday at El Pavo Real, a vineyard and tasting room 10 minutes away on the road to Queretaro. We attended their Sunday brunch with live music and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The music was great, the views fantastic and the hosts friendly.

April and Fernando were very attentive, and we could tell that Pavo Real is a passion for them. Opening through a difficult pandemic and then facing some of the unusual storms that we have had this season could not have been easy, but they are excited for the future.

We were invited by the incomparable Merle Herrera as she has a new mural there with lovely peacocks. Of course, she was painting another mural next to the first just because she could. If you never seen Merles peacocks, your missing out.

Oh, and there is a another mural done by Calladitos too! Too cool!

In addition to their amazing tasting room and outside area with in views of the volcano, El Picacho, they have rooms for rent, a pool and several places to just relax. The place is truly lovely. The food was great, the mimosas excellent and the artisanal mezcal to die for… and maybe a little dangerous.

Though it’s not something we could afford to do all the time, it was a lovely change. It’s a place you could have both an exciting party or just relax. I wanted to take my book and lay in one of their swings sipping mezcal all afternoon but had that happened, I likely still be there.
Word of warning! To get there, follow Google Maps. There is a small sign announcing the winery next to the pueblo of Sosnabar, but the road is… small.

Let me just say that if it seems like you’re not on the right road, you very likely are. Give it a try and enjoy the mezcal.
