  • A Kiloton of Food to Fight Hunger

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, GUANAJUATO, MEXICO – To fight starvation in San Miguel de Allende, Feed the Hungry San Miguel has delivered a metric kiloton of food, providing essential nutrition for thousands of desperate families. Kiloton is a powerful word. It is typically understood as a measurement of energy and destructive power. But for Feed the Hungry San Miguel, it represents something much more positive: the massive amount of food they have packaged and dispensed to battle hunger through its Feed the Families initiative. The program was launched in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 emergency, when thousands of already impoverished families lost their sources of income and were in dire need of help.

Feed the Hungry has since then delivered one thousand metric tons of food to struggling families in the San Miguel de Allende municipality.  This represents more than 13 million meals and a lifeline for more than 20,000 people. Every two weeks, Feed the Hungry delivers food bags to 37 communities.  In addition, 24 other NGOs and community advocates pick up food bags from the Feed the Hungry Center to distribute to their beneficiaries. These are the organizations:

    Casa Hogar Mexiquito boys orphanage
Casa Hogar Santa Julia girls orphanage

    IREE special needs school
    EEESMA school for the deaf

    ALMA nursing home
    Centro Infantil de Los Angeles

    S.O.M.E. (So Others May Eat)
    Mujeres en Cambio

    C.A.S.A. de la Loma
    ED Caminos

    Guardians de Guadiana
    Mano Amiga

    Sisters of Las Monjas
    JC3 Community

    Rancho Viejo Kinder
    Moral de Puerto de Nieto

    Agua Salada Community
    Begoña del Progreso Community

Carmen Delzell – delivers 240 bags monthly
Ben and Lori Green – delivered 40 bags monthly

Vicky Moore – delivered 54 bags monthly
Les Pearson – delivers 60 bags monthly

Joyce Meyers – delivers 8 bags monthly
Joy Rockwell and Mary Finley – delivered 425 bags until 7/21

As long as Feed the Hungry has the ongoing financial support of its many generous donors, they plan to continue to serve the families throughout this emergency.  Although most public schools have reopened, classes are only in the morning and attended by just half of the student population each day. When schools return to a normal schedule, they will resume their school meals program as well, which provides 5,000 hot, nutritious lunches every school day to secure the physical welfare of the children during their critical stages of growth and development.

Established in 1984, Feed the Hungry San Miguel, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) U.S. non-profit corporation guided by a dedicated Board of Trustees, supported by a small, professional staff and a corps of exceptional volunteers. Feed the Hungry San Miguel, Inc. raises funds and provides guidelines to its Mexican operating entity, Feed the Hungry A.C. and donataria autorizada. During the school year, they provide more than 5,000 hot meals every day in school kitchens in 36 needy communities. In response to the pandemic, Feed the Hungry retooled its operations to distribute food for entire families struggling to avoid starvation. To learn more visit feedthehungrysma.org.
