    On November 9, an awards ceremony was held at the Angela Peralta Theater for the NGOs of San Miguel de Allende. During the First Report of Activities, Sofía Espinoza Alvárez, the person in charge of Liaison with Civil Associations and attention to the foreign community, presented awards to social organizations for their achievements during this year of operations.

    The winners according to their category were:

    Economic support: San Miguel Community Foundation

    Art and culture: El Sindicato

    Attention to children: Patronato Pro Niños

    Sports: Boxing Association of San Miguel de Allende

    Social Development: Support for entrepreneurs

    Education: CASA (Centro para Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende)

    Environment: El Charco del Ingenio

    Animal Protection: Patitas de Humanidad

    Health: Hospice

    Food Health: Feed the Hungry

    Mental Health: Red de Apoyo por la Salud Mental (Mental Health Support Network)

    Emergency Services: Red Cross

    Society and government: Sanmiguelenses Unidos

    Home and day care: Corazón Valiente

    Heritage preservation: Cañada de la Virgen

    Housing: ALMA

    Women’s support: Women on the move in San Miguel de Allende

    Emerging NGO: I (love) animals

    In addition, Lee Carter was recognized as philanthropist of the year, María de Lourdes Tejeda Bautista as activist of the year, David Bossman, and Lola Cortina of Santuario Felino was also recognized.

    San Miguel de Allende’s only weekly bilingual newspaper Atención San Miguel was founded in in 1976, as a social enterprise of La Biblioteca de San Miguel de Allende. Atencion San Miguel and the what-to-do guide, Que Pasa give the widest coverage of news, cultural events and community activities in the vibrant World Heritage listed city of San Miguel de Allende. Published by volunteers of La Biblioteca over the years it has become the largest enterprise of the non-profit organization La Biblioteca de San Miguel de Allende. The newspaper contributes funds for La Biblioteca programs in education and cultural development for the children of San Miguel de Allende. Its mission is to educate, entertain, inform and influence.
