The culinary world will be abuzz with the arrival of Diana Kennedy at the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) this year. Kennedy is the world-renowned author of cookbooks on Mexican cuisine and has been its stalwart defender and promoter for more than 60 years. She is known as the “Mick Jagger of Mexican Cuisine,” a label she proudly wears, with her trademark leather pants and rock-star personality.

This year’s GIFF will feature the Latin America red carpet premiere of the new documentary about Diana’s life and her passionate fight to preserve traditional Mexican cooking. The documentary Nothing Fancy, directed by Elizabeth Carroll, features footage, interviews, and memories of Kennedy throughout her career in México. Famous chefs such as Alice Waters, José Andrés, Rick Bayless, and Gabriela Camara pay homage to her in this look into her daily life and past.

The film will be shown on Sunday, July 21, at 11am. For a schedule of this year’s GIFF films and more information on the documentary, go to www.giff.mx.

The same night, Donnie Masterton of The Restaurant will host a gala dinner tribute to Kennedy at his restaurant at 6pm. Masterton is preparing a special six-course tasting menu in honor of Kennedy and the documentary.

Kennedy has won many awards throughout her career, including two awards from the James Beard Foundation, one for Cookbook of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement award. The latter goes to a person with a “lifetime body of work [that] has had a positive and long-lasting impact on the way we eat, cook, and think about food.”

In México, Kennedy has received prestigious awards from local, national, and international governments and organizations that recognize her contributions to Mexican traditional cuisine worldwide.

On July 19, Camino Silvestre, located at Correo 43, will be hosting a salon with Kennedy entitled “A Conversation with Diana,” where the author will have time for questions. She will also sign copies of all of her cookbooks from 5 to 7pm.
