It is difficult to think of a more lavish and opulent production of an opera than Franco Zeffirelli’s staging of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, which the Italian director debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New
    York in 1987.

From the moment the curtain rises on China’s Imperial City, the setting for the opera, the audience can’t help but take in the entire gilded eye-popping set, replete with pagodas of red fire, dragons, gongs, lanterns, and pavilions.

Puccini’s final masterpiece is a crowd pleaser, one of the most popular works in the opera repertoire. Unless you have been living in a cave, you have surely heard its signature tenor aria, “Nessun Dorma,” which captivated a global audience when Luciano Pavarotti sang it at the 1990 World Cup.

On Saturday, October 12, the Metropolitan Opera begins its 2019–2020 season of its Live in HD movie-theater simulcasts, with the Zeffirelli production of Turandot, starring dramatic soprano Christine Goerke, who brings her fierce portrayal to the title role. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin heads the podium. Tenor Yusif Eyvazov is the mysterious prince Calàf alongside soprano Eleonora Buratto as Liù and bass-baritone James Morris as Timur.

This live cinema broadcast is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to more than 2,200 theaters in more than 70 countries worldwide.

One of those theaters is the Teatro Ángela Peralta, which will be presenting Turandot live, with subtitles in English, at 11:55am on October 12. (In New York, the live opera begins at 12:55pm Eastern Time.)

The Peralta has been outfitted with an enormous screen that fills the entire stage, and an improved sound system. The sharp-focus detail of the Met’s vast stage is a delight to the eye, and every note will come to audiences live.

One would normally have to travel to a North American city to see the Turandot broadcast with subtitles in English, at a ticket price of likely around US$34 about 660 pesos at today’s conversion rate. But the ticket prices for the Met’s Live in HD at the Peralta are only 500 pesos for orchestra and box seats, 350 pesos for the center of the first balcony, and 200 pesos for the remainder of the first balcony. There is also a student price of 100 pesos for the second balcony.

As of this writing, the remainder of the 2019–2020 Live in HD season will also be presented at the Peralta and will run until next May, culminating with Gaetano Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda.

Tickets for the live broadcast of Turandot at the Peralta are on sale at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, located at Ancha de San Antonio 123. Tickets are on sale Monday–Saturday, 11am–5pm, and online at boletocity.com
