  •    Calzones and Strombolis are made differently everywhere you go.  So what’s the difference between our Calzone and our Stromboli?

Lets start with the Calzone.  We take our pizza dough and stretching it out into a circle. Then in the middle of the dough we place the ingredients you prefer layered (usually two items) along with ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese and Romano cheese.  Then we fold it over to make a half moon looking pillow, and pinch a small hole to release the hot air. We also braid the dough around the edge to make pretty and it holds everything together.   We bake ours in a gas oven and when ready we top it with our signature garlic oil mix, Romano cheese and a little parsley.  Our  marinara sauce is served on the side.

Our Stromboli is a little different, some places put sauce inside, we do not, sauce comes served on the side.  We have two sizes – the Mini Stromboli and our Regular Stromboli. Make no mistake, the Mini is not so mini, it just has 3 ingredients versus 7 ingredients plus cheese.  The big differences between the Calzone and the Stromboli is its shape and the only cheese in the Stromboli is mozzarella cheese.  So with our big boy Stromboli we take our pizza dough and stretch it into a large rectangle. Then on one end we start to add the ingredients- pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, peppers, onions, ham and mozzarella cheese.  We roll it up folding over the end so nothing leaks out using all the dough.  Then we slice some small holes on the top so that the heat is able to slowly escape. After its baked we top it off with our signature garlic oil mix, Romano cheese and parsley.

Calzone is said to have originated in Naples Italy. Most people have credited the Stromboli invention to a restaurant in Philadelphia called Romano’s back in 1950.

For over 45 years we have made a mini version of Stromboli call the Roni Roll, which we still make here in Mexico today.  In those we just roll up pepperoni and cheese and serve with sauce on the side.

We used to ship them all over the US and they miss them. Some locals here in SMA have actually coined the name “Joey Rolls” in honor of the cook, thank you. They can have other ingredients too, but normally just one. Easy to handle and dip in sauce. We make them all fresh to order and you are sure to be filled and satisfied. Try one or all of them today!
