Whether you are writing a novel, nonfiction or a memoir, the key to composing a book that readers will embrace is to paint a picture with originality, subtlety and your personal insight. This month, the San Miguel Literary Sala welcomes David Corbett, Kathrin Lake and Jessica Nelson, who will explore the craft of authentic writing. Jamie Brickhouse, accomplished writer and publicist, will lead a class on publication and marketing. All workshops are 3-hours long, split into 90-minute sessions over two days.

David Corbett’s workshop, The Compass of Character: Creating Complex Character Motivation will guide students in an examination of the four key counteracting forces tugging at a character’s willfulness and motivation: Lack, Yearning, Resistance, and Desire. From there, the class will explore how to conceptualize and interweave the character’s three main struggle threads: internal, external, and interpersonal. This intensive 3-hour workshop, by the author of The Art of Character, The Compass of Character and six novels will be held on June 21 & 23, at 3-4:30PM CDT.

Kathrin Lake, author of the Happy Hammock and Writing with Cold Feet, will present a workshop entitled Memories to Memoirs: How to Show the Past (Not Tell It). She will show you how to make your memoir a compelling read using fiction techniques. Kathrin will lead exercises using writing prompts designed for memoir writing, and will help you in structuring your memoir. June 21 & 23, 5:30-7PM CDT.

Jamie Brickhouse’s workshop, I’ve Looked at Publicity from Both Sides Now: Publicity & Marketing from a Former Book Publicist & Current Author, on how to write a pitch letter, press release, pitch the media, create successful and innovative author appearances from bookstores and beyond, and the nuts and bolts of going out on a book tour. June 22 & 24 at 3-4:30PM CDT.

Jessica Nelson will teach you how to use significant, sensory details to evoke an emotionally and intellectually engaged image on the page in her workshop The Science and Art of Imagery and Metaphor. She is a professor of Creative Writing, the author of a memoir and co-author of the forthcoming Advanced Creative Nonfiction: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology. Drawing on lessons from art and poetry, you will engage in multi-sensory writing on June 22 & 24, 5:30-7PM CDT.
