In the fall, the entire North American monarch butterfly population that lives east of the Rockies starts a 3,000-mile journey to a small area of high-altitude tropical forest in Mexico’s trans volcanic range. Millions of them return to the same trees in the same forest every year, even though three to four generations have passed since the last season. Every visit to see the butterflies is different. If it’s chilly or rainy the butterflies cluster in the trees. At first the backs of their wings look like dead leaves and you may not realize you’re looking at thousands of butterflies. When the sun hits them, they take to the air all at once in impressive explosions. What sounds like the wind is actually the flapping of thousands of butterfly wings.

It is unclear what the situation will be in their sanctuaries. Some authorities are threatening to close their preserves to visitors this season. While this decision may be epidemiologically sound, it could herald an economic and ecological disaster for the impoverished communities that share this fragile forest habitat with overwintering monarch butterflies. Find out what ecotourism operators are doing during this strange season to make sure the butterfly forest stays protected. This talk explores virtual butterfly tourism as well as in-person, off-season options, such as birding and horseback riding.

This weeks guest speakers at the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende are Ellen Sharp and Joel Moreno,  the co-owners of JM Butterfly B&B in Macheros, Mexico, and the cofounders of Butterflies & Their People, AC, a forest conservation non-profit that employs locals to protect the Cerro Pelon Sanctuary. Macheros-native Joel hails from a family of forest rangers. US-born Ellen met Joel on Cerro Pelon in 2011. She finished a PhD in cultural anthropology at UCLA before moving to Macheros in 2013 to join Joel in the struggle to create environmental justice for the monarchs’ Mexican neighbors.
