Escape to the Country: Artist Home, Studio, and Gallery Tour

Bring your camera! The jaw-dropping homes and landscapes, studios and shops, and galleries we visit will create an unforgettable San Miguel experience. Stops highlight the genius of artists, architects, and designers. These properties and their owners have been profiled internationally, from Montreal to Tokyo.

This unique outing includes a personal tour of the most unusual home and gallery in all of Mexico, Made by Anado, where the owners share the stories behind the memorable buildings, walls, and art installations. The artist and his partner are as colorful as the place they call home.

At the next stop we’ll explore another extraordinary home in a lush setting and Trip Advisor’s #1 San Miguel shopping destination: Galeria Atotonilco, showcasing 6,500 sq. ft. of the best folk art from all over Mexico, Columbia, Guatemala, Panama, and beyond. The artistic traditions specific to each village or region are sustained by the gallery’s purchases, handled directly by the owner who spent three decades as a studio artist while developing a discerning eye and deep respect for the families who produce artisan-quality craft and design.

We complete our escape to the country at the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico”, Santuario de Atotonilco. Built in 1750 by priest Luis Felipe Néri, the walls and ceilings are covered with poems and Bible stories painted by Miguel Antonio Martinez de Pocasangre, who spent thirty years completing the project. It is the second most visited pilgrimage site in the country—the first in Mexico, and the world, is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Light snacks and bottled water are included. You are welcome to bring additional food items and beverages. Please dress comfortably.

An optional, no-cost tour extension may be added at the drop-off location to explore the region’s most comprehensive arts complex: Fábrica la Aurora. For your dining pleasure, several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines are located within the structure.

This tour often sells out, please purchase your ticket today. The tour is led by Maia Williams, San Miguel Writers’ Conference co-director. Proceeds help support the building of a community center in San Miguel’s original indigenous settlement, San Miguel Viejo by the local nonprofit, Ojalá Niños, A.C.
