In playwright Jen Silverman’s two-hander The Roommate, Sharon, a divorced Iowa housewife in her fifties, is seeking a woman her age to share her spacious house. She gets her roommate, and a lot more than she bargained for, in Robyn, a pot-smoking (and growing) lesbian vegan from the Bronx, with a shady past and a string of suspicious aliases. Both women are about to have their lives utterly transformed by one another.

Following a performance of Silverman’s 2015 play at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, a drama critic for the New Haven Review raved: “A female Odd Couple…a comedy about what it takes to re-route your life – and what happens when the wheels come off. Very, very funny.”

The Roommate will be presented in a full production at the San Miguel Playhouse, with Lee Duberman as Robyn and Desiree Duncan as Sharon. Richard Fink directs. There will be a total of eight performances, Thursdays through Saturdays at 7pm, and Sundays at 3pm, on December 5 through 8, and December 12 through 15.

Reserved-seat tickets for all shows are 300 pesos for the center section, and 250 pesos for the side sections, on sale for cash or credit/debit card at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Friday, 11am to 5pm, or online by visiting boletocity.com, or by clicking either of the BUY TICKETS ONLINE buttons in this email newsletter.

Tickets can also be purchased at the theater door starting one hour before each performance.

There will be projected supertitles in Spanish, and in an effort to encourage more sanmiguelense Mexicans to attend, the presentation of a Mexican drivers’ license at the door entitles the bearer to purchase up to two tickets for 100 pesos each.

Lee Duberman, who co-owns Casa Papaya with husband Richard Fink, studied acting in New York with Uta Hagen. Her stage credits include lead roles in Dancing at Lughnasa’Night MotherAll’s Well that Ends Well, and various musicals. In 2017 she produced and directed Little Shop of Horrors at the San Miguel Playhouse.

Desiree Duncan is a graduate of Ball State University School of Music, where she performed in choral groups and theatrical productions. In theaters in Texas, Tennessee, and Florida, she portrayed Tamora in Titus Andronicus, Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, and Abigail Adams in 1776. In The Roommate, she will be making her San Miguel Playhouse debut.

Richard Fink holds a B.A. in theater from the University of New Mexico, and co-founded the Alley Theater Southwest in Albuquerque. His directing credits include Pinter’s Old Times and an original adaptation of Gogol’s The Nose. He has acted extensively in regional theaters, and portrayed Mr. Muchnik in Little Shop of Horrors.

David’s Ziff spectacular set for The Roommate, with assistance from Barbara Ziff, Fred Collins, and John Chapman, brings Broadway-quality production values to the San Miguel Playhouse.

The Playhouse is located at Av. Indpendencia 82, and features secured free parking and taxi concierge service.

Just came from a performance of “The Roommate” at the San Miguel Playhouse.

A surprising, lively dark comedy that made for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. I recommend you get your tickets at Boleto City or at the theater before the performances–7 PM Friday and Saturday, 3 PM matinee Sunday.

      Well worthwhile.
