Imagine for the sake of whimsy that Jesus’s DNA has been extracted from his burial shroud, the Shroud of Turin, cloned by nuclear transfer, like the real Dolly the Sheep, or the fictitious dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, and brought back to life in some near-future dystopia. In his new incarnation, Jesus is a musical entertainer backed by a rock band called The Disciples. In the meantime, he befriends a cloned version of Marilyn Monroe, and finds himself at odds with the cynical female industrialist behind the cloning scheme.

That is the premise of Souled Out, a new rock musical with a book by Seth Sharp and Lynn Rawden and fourteen original songs by Sharp, about to have its world premiere in five performances at the San Miguel Playhouse. The show runs from Wednesday, April 10, through Sunday, April 14, with all shows at 7pm, except for the Sunday show, a 3pm matinee. Sharp led the popular San Miguel rock band The Sharpies, and acted and sang in numerous theatrical productions in San Miguel, including a well-attended run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in early 2011. He has been absent from San Miguel for several years, and the show marks not only his character’s comeback, but his own. Sharp sings and acts in the role of the genetically engineered Jesus.

Rawden, a graphic designer, was producer of the Hedwig production, which ran at the Santa Ana Theater. For Souled Out, she has recruited the director John Morrow, who also directed Hedwig. French-Canadian actress and dancer Valérie Fortin will be making her San Miguel Playhouse debut as Marilyn Monroe, and Crystal Calderoni has been cast as Luci, the power-mad industrialist. The Disciples, an actual rock band assembled for the show – Alex Martin on guitar, Rodney Evans on drums, Kate Lowenstein on keyboards, and DJ Ali Agus – round out the cast.

The show’s fourteen songs were composed by Sharp in styles as varied as Eighties synthpop, indie rock, Beatles-style frothy pop, cabaret, punk, and rock anthem.

Souled Out will be the second new musical to have its world premiere at the San Miguel Playhouse this year, coming just two months after Bikers in Camelot. The San Miguel Playhouse is located at Avenida Independencia 82, and features secured free parking and taxi-concierge service.

Reserved seats (by row and seat number) are on sale at Boleto City, on the second floor of the Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123, open Monday through Saturday. Tickets are 400 pesos for the center section and 300 pesos for the side sections.

For more information, please write to info@boletocity.com, or call during office hours: (415) 152 6432.

Wow, Souled Out Is really a great show. The music and the cast are wonderful…and especially the message is inspiring. I’m not a play person and this really caught me…

Three performances left, it’s at the playhouse in Indenpendencia. Definitely worth seeing!!
