WIESENTHAL by Tom Dugan returns for four performances  February 28 – March 3

One might think that a one-man play about the life of Simon Wiesenthal — legendary Holocaust survivor turned hunter of Nazi war criminals — might be a real serious affair.

However, according to Tom Dugan, writer of “Wiesenthal,” the show has many humorous moments mixed in with the serious ones.”

“Wiesenthal had a great sense of humor,” said Dugan. “In fact, before the war he was an amateur stand-up comedian. He was not a dour man, despite the serious nature of his work. Wiesenthal’s sense of humor allowed me to write the play in a way that leaves audiences with an uplifting message.”

Part memoir and part spy thriller, Dugan’s play introduces us to Wiesenthal on the day before his retirement as he welcomes his final group of Americans to his office in The Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna.

“With all that is going on in the world today WIESENTHAL is ever so relevant for all.” Alan Jordan, director

I just saw a totally engrossing, professional performance of a one man show about Simon Weisenthal, who hunted Nazi criminals for years after World War !!, and was known as the “Jewish James Bond”. The play is at the Shelter Theater for two more performances, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Starring Alan Jordan, who also directed, it is a chance to see theater of the highest quality. Don’t Miss It.

I totally agree with Tasha. We also were there last night and were blown away with the performance by Yitzhak Wolf. From the moment he walked into the room, he was Weisenthal. He left us in the room alone to remember.

The play was entertaining and enlightening. This play is an essential reminder and a cautionary tale for our current times. We must remember and not repeat this dark time in our history.

Get your tickets (if you can).

      Dear Alan,

First of all, I was totally surprised when you walked in as the actor portraying Simon Wiesenthal! I understood you were directing but was in the dark about the actor who would play the part. Secondly, your attention to detail was so evident and it is one of your major contributions to theatre in this town. Then of course, the acting; what can I say. I was totally drawn in and absorbed and had white knuckles as I felt so much the incidents you were describing. You were able to bring them so realistically to life as have the many books I have read over most of my life.

Your “cozy” office felt “well used”; books and magazines stacked and slightly askew as we would all have done; the rolling desk was a brilliant ideas and gave movement and realistic interaction to what could have been a static environment. And the rughles (SP) were another wonderful way of including us not as a theatre audience but as a group visiting your office.

Alan, you have given us another theatrical gift. Your attention to every single detail is so well appreciated by me, and so many others. I want to see this play again – and – look forward to future ones you most certainly will develop.

What a gift you are to SMA theatre! Congratulations, Luisa

I am a fairly critical theater-goer, so for me it means a lot to say that Alan Jordan’s theater productions, either as actor or as director, are consistently excellent. He has a new play coming up at the Shelter Theater with performances on September 13, 14, 15, and 16: “Simon Wiesenthal: The Nazi Hunter.” Wiesenthal, who died in 2005 at the age of 96, survived five concentrations camps including Buchenwald. He devoted his life after the war to hunting down Nazis in hiding. While of course this is a play about Jews, it is much more universal than that. Giving voice to the murdered and bringing the guilty to justice is so often needed all over the world.

I urge you to see it.
