2020 San Miguel Playwrights Winter Showcase Celebrates New Works
By Meredith Beaumont
Seven local playwrights with international affiliations, together with top local directors and twelve of San Miguel’s finest actors are presenting their brand new, ever popular, Winter Showcase of short plays. With seven different plays and seven different themes – humorous, poignant, scary, mysterious – love them or hate them, they’re guaranteed to entertain.
Can Neptune (Rick Davey) hear something on the wind as he leans out on the balcony of his new condo and will his wife (Karen Temple) give him something other than a tv dinner for the third night in a row? He’s hoping his favourite niece (Marilyn Bullivant) is coming to visit but she’s late, maybe she missed the boat? Playwright David Temple takes the helm.
Betty’s (Lee Duberman) job is sorting laundry and amid the steam, she doesn’t like what she finds. Her sister (Lauren Osornio) is not well and her best friend (Gina Giampaoli) is having an affair. Her brother-in-law (Richard Fink) can’t tell right from wrong but his father is the mayor… Playwright Anne Campbell drags us, screaming, through this scenario of mystery and mayhem.
All children love a new dog, right? Wrong. As playwright/arts educator Tasha Paley’s neglected children come alive in her brilliant monologue, we realize the heartbreak of pet ownership and the therapy of the primeval scream.
Guilty or not? Framed or innocent? What is the truth about a high risk inmate of a mental health facility? A visitor arrives and playwright/psychologist Bruce Sarbit starts to unravel a frightening reality.
It’s a gorgeous renovation – so how come it’s not selling? Barry’s (Rick Davey) amateur foray into the world of do-it-yourself teeters on the brink of incompetence. Can he convince his wife, Heather, that it’s as good as he thinks it is, that there’s economic value in his work? Playwright/humorist Marilyn Bullivant helps him hammer out a case.
Playwright/cinematographer Dennis Lanson’s characters are on a road trip, aren’t they? Perhaps not, perhaps they don’t even know each other… but how come they have the same destination? Are actors Mick Diener and Gregory Diamant on the road to nowhere?
The car’s in the garage and who should be driving it? Three generations (Lois Read, Catherine Bryne, Ben Brill) vie for its attention. How many fender-benders has it submitted to? Is experience more important than youth? Playwright Sharon Steeber steers us through.
There will be four performances, Thursday through Saturday, January 30 to February 1, at 7pm; and a Sunday matinee at 3 pm on February 2. The Showcase is presented at the San Miguel Playhouse, Avenida Independencia 82. The Playhouse features secured free parking and taxi concierge service.
