Neil Simon died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on August 26, 2018, and the time has come for a serious reassessment of Broadway’s so-called “King of Comedy.” Many authors mine their own family histories early in their careers, and then run out of subject matter. Simon waited until he had written fifteen plays, and had thoroughly learned his craft, before turning autobiographical in the 1980s, with comedic dramas that explored the pain and pathos, along with the survival mechanism of laughter, of his own working-class Jewish family. Simon hit his peak in 1991 with Lost in Yonkers, his finest achievement, and his only play to win a Pulitzer Prize. Set during World War II, the play concerns the plight of two boys forced to live with their stern German-born grandmother, while their father, Eddie, works to pay off a debt. The boys bond uneasily with their aunt Bella, a woman in her thirties with cognitive problems but a clear sense of self-worth, as she strives to break free from the loveless dominance of her mother, the boys’ grandmother.

San Miguel’s local theatrical legend, Lola Smith, portraying the grandmother, leads a spectacular cast that includes Jocelynn Sunrise (Bella) and Neil Sklar (Eddie), accomplished actors who moved to San Miguel just this year. Fil Formicola plays the boys’ gangster uncle, Louis, and Kate Rowland portrays their ailing Aunt Gertrude. Two newcomers, Joey Pawelko and Anwar H. Saadi, boy actors of exceptional talent, round out the cast. Lost in Yonkers is presented in English with projected supertitles in Spanish. It is great entertainment for the entire family, and sure to be ranked among the finest theatrical productions ever seen in San Miguel.

No one should miss this show. The acting is remarkable, but so is the script, the set, the direction, etc. … Drop whatever you had planned — a wedding, divorce, funeral, bar mitzvuh, mani/pedi if you must, but see it before it closes October 28
