There are few experiences more delightful in the theater than seeing superbly trained comedic actors thinking on their feet and improvising. The fun is enhanced when the audience gets to participate.

This is the concept behind Steve Frost’s British Murder Mysteries, two plays being performed over two weeks at the San Miguel Playhouse starting this month.

The first play, entitled Who Killed the Theater Director?, will run from Thursday, February 20 through Sunday, February 23; and the second play, Who Killed the Ship’s Captain?, runs from Thursday, February 27 through Sunday, March 1. The Sunday shows are 3pm matinees, and all other performances are at 7pm.

Steve Frost wrote the plays and leads a talented cast. Frost is a veteran British actor and a regular on the London comedy circuit.  London’s Guardian newspaper calls him a “redoubtable conceptual comic improviser,” and, for good measure, “hilarious.”  Frost has acted alongside Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder and Mr. Bean, and has performed at the Edinburgh and Glastonbury festivals with likes of Eddie Izzard and Mike Myers. He is perhaps best known for his work on BBC Radio 4, including the hit improvisational show Who’s Line Is It Anyway?

The cast also includes Janet Prince, last seen at the San Miguel Playhouse in her spectacular one-woman show Murder, Margaret and Me, and most recently on British television with Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville. Pete Searles, who just completed four shows of his comic monologue Hey Gringo! Bolivia and Beyond to packed houses at the Playhouse, is another cast member.

Rounding out the cast are Henrietta Weekes (Alan Bennett’s Talking HeadsThe Odd CoupleTaking Sides), Phoebe Greyson (Talking Heads, Lettice and Lovage), Sebastian Vallin (Act of GodRomance), and Enrique Argumedo, an outstanding Peruvian-born actor making his Playhouse debut.

Frost provides this description for his British Murder Mysteries: “Imagine watching Murder, She Wrote performed by the Marx Brothers with big big laughs, and then you get to tell Angela Lansbury “ whodunit” – and if you’re right, you get a prize. Answer sheets will be provided, as well a list of the characters to help you in your sleuthing.  You can play individually or form teams. There’s even a prize for best team name. So come on down, bring your magnifying glass, your deer stalker, a sharp pencil, and definitely a sharp mind. The game is afoot!”

Reserved-seat tickets for all shows are 350 pesos for the center section and 300 for the side sections, on sale now at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm; and online at boletocity.com; or by clicking either of the “Buy Tickets Online” buttons in this email bulletin.

The San Miguel Playhouse is located at Avenida Independencia 82, and features free secured parking and taxi concierge service.
