Born in 1919, Terry attended New College in Newark which was part of Columbia University at the time. Studying art and design she began her long career as an artist.  After graduation she married Phillip Hertz who was a soldier in WWII.  When he returned they opened a ceramic and design shop in Manhattan which they ran for the next 10 years- 1948 to 1958.  By then they had 3 sons and decided to relocate to Seattle Washington where Terry taught art to all levels of grade school children.  She would later continue this vocation when they moved to California.  Phillip and Terry were divorced in 1970 and three years later she would marry Charles Daugherty an art teacher and sculptor. After moving to Claremont California they opened the popular and widely known gallery and treasure shop, The Wandering Eye  where they showcased Terry and Chuck’s art as well as treasures and antiques they acquired from their travels around the world.

In 1981 Chuck and Terry visited San Miguel de Allende during one of Chuck’s sabbaticals and liked what they saw. Then in 1995 they would move here permanently. Terry continued to create and exhibit her artwork through Happenings Gallery, which later became Galeria Photo/Graphics which is run by Jo Brenzo and is still on Mesones Street in downtown San Miguel.

Terry was passionate about creating images where questions pertaining to girls and women were highlighted by soft colors and stereotype nuances. She incorporated sewing, flowers, butterflies and hearts. Using her own family photographs which she made copies of and transferred onto paper, canvas, velvet, cotton, Mylar and metallic paper she was always experimenting with solutions to juxtaposing figures and objects in a pleasing invitation to look closer.  In using her family history and actual experiences she created a very personal portrait of her life and times.

One of her last big exhibits was in the Galeria Photo/Graphics at 57 Mesones where she donated 100% of proceeds to Mujeres en Cambio a local organization which raises money for the education of girls from areas around and in San Miguel.  Terry died in 2019 at the age of 100 years old. We hope you can join us for this last look at the wonderful works by Terry Hertz and collection of treasures.
