    Calle Canal 152

If some last minute gift shopping is on your list or if you are looking for something special for the host of the holiday get together, we have the perfect solution. DiSeña is having a soft opening this Friday and Saturday. This special little shop has been in the planning stages for many months and is ready to open its doors on a limited basis only to clients who wish to purchase a little something that is unique, practical and beautiful. We invite you to please come by to see the many wonderful crafts handmade by the students of Escuela de Educación Especial de San Miguel de Allende, the School for Special Education. The School is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that all San Miguel de Allende children who are Deaf become literate, independent and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals.

Sanjuana Garcia, Director says; “A big part of that process includes having the older students take the opportunity and responsibility of learning a skill or craft that can later be translated into employment after graduation. The school provides the opportunity, the students take on the responsibility’. There are currently three Vocational Training Workshops in action and the students of each are proud to showcase their completed works to the public.

The Young Jewelry Makers have been tutored over the past two years by well known San Miguel jewelry designers David Godinez and Javier Bustos and mixed media artist and designer, the late Joe Miller. The students’ work has progressed very well, far beyond expectations, and we know you will be excited to see their fine silver jewellery, being sold at very reasonable prices.

The Young Sewers have been learning and practicing each afternoon after school under the tutelage of several fine instructors, including local seamstress Carolina Rayas and Irapuato designer, Aurelio Garcia. Several of the students have progressed from simple seams to complicated fashion design and execution. For this event all have created many Christmas themed articles such as; pillow cushions, runners, table cloths, napkins, small zipper bags and embroidered hand towels.

The Young Woodworkers have been very prolific and diversified across their two
year training period. Under the guidance of instructors Jym Scott, Sid Martin, Steven Cohen, Rogelio Cruz, John Byfield and others the students have mastered the creation of wooden puzzles, simple tables, benches and book shelves, serviette holders, small kitchen utensils and, most recently, artists’ easels that will amaze.

“Attending DiSeña’s initial opening this weekend will provide a great lift and vote of confidence to this fine group of young people who happen to be Deaf. You in turn will feel good about what you witness” says proud board president, John Doherty “and, should you choose, your visit will result in the purchase of a treasured handmade gift to take home for your pleasure or as a gift for someone special in your life. Happy Holidays to everyone”!

The shop will open its doors at Calle Canal 152, located just before the bridge that takes you to Calzada de la Estación. Look for the purple and white ribbons.
