This Sunday the Reverend Tom Rosiello and leaders of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel de Allende will ask members to consider the values that matter most as the Fellowship seeks financial resources for this year’s programs. The service will initiate the UUFSMA 2021 Pledge Drive for members’ funding in a year when the San Miguel community and the world continue to struggle with uncertainty, division, and competing values during the Covid-19 pandemic. Before asking members to reach generous hands into their pockets, Rev. Rosiello and the Pledge Team will ask them to reach into their hearts with a simple question. “What really matters?” The answer can determine the quality of individual lives as well as the measure of one’s contribution to our community and world.

Advertisers selling a product or service often offer superficial answers to that question amid the busyness, noise, and distractions of everyday life. Sunday’s service will ask the Fellowship to weigh this question at a deeper level. These times of diminished activity and human interaction provide a compelling setting in which to answer it with empathy and abundance.

Heartfelt and honest answers determine how we live our lives, direct our efforts, select friends and associates, and use the gifts we possess. Many will say that justice and equality really matter. Others may say that care for the future of Mother Earth really matters. Others know that helping others to cherish life really matters. Many recognize that teaching positive and healthy values to children really matters. Having family and friends within an inclusive, supportive community also matters enormously. And so too it matters that people spend sacred time together each week to refresh one’s soul, nurture spiritual growth, and understand oneself.

The core UUFSMA mission is providing all these things that really matter.  Generous pledges of support allow this vital community to do “What Really Matters” for individuals, our members and friends, our Mexican community, and our planet.

“Giving Until it Feels Good” is the name of the 2021 Pledge Campaign. The ambitious goal is $90,000 USD — $15,000 USD more than last year. Because member pledges provide the greatest portion of the UUFSMA budget, they will be the major factor this year in surmounting the decline in Sunday collections from the loss of in-person services due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our members’ generosity also translates into something else that really matters – financial support in the San Miguel community to non-profit organizations, which receive 50 percent of Fellowship pledges and donations.
