This Sunday’s online service by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel de Allende (UUFSMA) is the first after the contentious and stress-filled US Elections and will focus on healing the divides between people with strongly held opposing political views. The theme of the service is “We Would Be One”, reflecting the hope that people can come together and treat each other with dignity and respect and work to address the pressing problem of our time. After months of chaos, hate and shifting truth, resulting in anxiety and exhaustion, we will come together for healing and support and begin to step forward with hope and love.

Despite the current uncertainties of our world – which has been struggling with a global pandemic, intensified economic and racial discrimination, and a seeming loss of compassion –  we will gather to renew our exhausted spirits, find our common humanity, and try to let go of some of the things that have weighed so heavily upon us.

Even with the results of some political races still up in the air, we as a liberal religious tradition wish to begin to recover, to recommit to our UU principles of “justice, equity and compassion inhuman relations” and a “world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.”

For this special service, we will turn to the sustaining power of music and the written word for our messages.  Poems, prose readings and multiple music selections in many different styles will help us let go of the anger and angst of the past months, embrace peace and renew our commitment to treating each other with respect and dignity. To help guide us in doing so, a brief reflection will be offered by the Fellowship’s minister, the Reverend Tom Rosiello.

As our cherished UU hymn affirms, “we would be one in building for tomorrow a nobler world than we have known today. We would be one in searching for that meaning which binds our hearts and points us on our way. As one, we pledge ourselves to greater service, with love and justice, strive to make us free.”
