In this Sunday’s online service, Rev. Tom Rosiello speaks to the spirit of Easter as a reservoir of strength for millions of people who feel a “tomb-like” confinement during our world’s war against the Covid-19 virus.

“Whether the biblical version of what happened that first Easter is believable to you or not, the insight that one does not have to be imprisoned by traumatic world events is valid for all of us and so very important to embrace now,” Rev. Rosiello says.

Our global struggle to restore a healthy environment requires social-distancing and self-quarantine for our bodies, he counsels. However, with renewed life, our spirits and minds can rise to this historic moment, inspire hope, and spread compassion and love.

To tie these insights to a timeless message of Easter, he cites the beloved former Rev. Max Coots who wrote, “In each of us is written a new version of the old story of Easter, the empty tomb, the renewal. We are part of what the ancient myth can mean, for we can be the resurrection and the life.”

“This time will be long remembered,” Rosiello says. “So, we must now embrace a deep message of Easter. Each of us possesses the power to roll the stone away and let light into our hearts and minds. A dark tomb is no place to remain. Draw upon powers of spirit and mind that move us toward new life. Discover unexpected joy beyond the present sadness.”

As part of the online service, others will read from the poetry of Unitarian e. e. cummings and the sermons of Afro-American theologian Howard Thurman. Concert pianist Malcolm Halliday will perform piano and organ solos. Sorbonne-trained soprano Clara Dunham will perform the “Alleluia” from Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate and lead an online chorus in Easter songs. As explained below, join us for this service that will inspire your sense of hope and community in this time of crisis and concern.

To avoid transmission of the Covid-19 virus, the UU Fellowship will offer this Sunday Service online at 10:30 am. The Fellowship has canceled on-site services until the virus is contained.

Our fellowship was born in 1987 when a small group of expatriate religious liberals came together to meet as Unitarian Universalists in San Miguel de Allende. The fellowship has been active and thriving ever since. Every UU church has it’s own flavor, and we are no exception. We are a combination of expats and visitors, each actively engaged and contributing to this wonderful Mexican community we love. Because there is a coming, going, and returning aspect, our spiritual community is extremely fluid.  There is a magic in San Miguel which draws us in and binds us together—both as members of the church and of the larger community. Our programming is led by visiting ministers, community leaders, and church members, so the variety is lively. We have opportunities to meet as UU’s each week at discussion groups, breakfasts, luncheons, and in various other ways. Depending on the season, attendance fluctuates between 40 and 140. Our primary focus is on funding social action within the surrounding community. We love good music, good discussion, good food, and having visitors. We invite you to join us any Sunday morning.
