Beverly Street Studio School, founded in 1992, is located in Historic Staunton, Virginia. It was founded to offer university level classes, in the visual arts, to adult students. Part of their program is to offer experiences in the arts, history and food internationally. A group will be visiting and attending classes in San Miguel de Allende with renown painter Efren Gonzalez.

Efren Gonzalez resides in Ajijjic, his birthplace, with his family in a home he built entirely from the sales of his paintings. For years he struggled with the dream of living and supporting his family from his art. Born in 1972, this impassioned local talent started experimenting as soon as he could hold a pencil. He grew up in Ajijjic, winning local and regional competitions at an early age. Efren started out studying architecture and the Plastic Arts but soon found he didn’t have the patience for either. After working in a variety of jobs while always painting, Efren was offered a small grant to study Art at a small college in Maryland. He stayed a year and made the most of this opportunity by seeing firsthand many great works only previously seen in books.

A prodigious painter in all media; watercolor, oil, pastel and acrylic, he continues to hone his skills by taking classes from other painting masters with oil being his preferred medium.  His paintings are intensely alive, full of color and meaning and they give great insight into Mexico. His paintings depict everyday life capturing all the colors and people of his beloved Mexico. He is equally well known as a muralist having completed his first intricate mural in the 90’s for his hometown of Ajijjic. He also teaches painting workshops in many locals throughout Mexico and had had his work permanently exhibited in Puerta Vallarta. He has recently travelled to the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Greece and France painting, teaching and exhibiting his work.

An exhibit of his work and his student’s work will be held on Friday, April 26th at the Bordello Galeria, Casa de la Noche at 6:00 PM. This one evening event will be held at the Bordello Galeria  Fountain Patio, located at Organos 19, ½ block off Hernandez Macias.

Sr. Gonzalez is donating a potion of his sales to  disabled children in San Miguel.  Please join us!
