The term crush is an English slang word that has dual meaning:
- I have a crush on you”. Used to express a brief but intense infatuation for someone, especially someone unattainable or inappropriate.
- “I was crushed when I found out that he wasn’t what I thought he was.” Being crushed by the disappointment of an expectation.
On February 15th at Galeria Nepantla, Isis Rodriguez will unveil 2 new archetypes, a man and a woman, that show our fears, common perceptions and expectations in the controversial world of online dating applications, such as Tinder, Bumble and Match.com and in bars and night clubs. There will be 12 new paintings, in the form of portraiture, still lifes and scenes based on her own dating experience as a single 55 year old woman searching for love.
Galeria Nepantla opened it’s doors in 2017 with Isis’s 1st show, “Legends from the Realm of Nepantla”, which was designed to tell the story of a woman of healthy body but of conflicted mind who was fighting to eliminate the conflict of shame and guilt. Isis named her gallery, Nepantla, after the 16th Century Aztec word, that means “in the middle” and was coined to express how they felt during the conquest 500 years ago.
“I believe that we all suffer whether we are aware or not, of our own personal conquests and ancestral trauma. What I want to do with my art, is to show the conflict moving toward evolution sot that we can move on and be better human beings.”
Every year the artist picks a theme of conflict and this year, she has chosen love.

Maestra Isis Rodriguez is a dynamic art teacher who incorporates both classical methods dating back 500 years and modern art school practices. Isis has taught drawing and painting for 20 years as an art professor in several institutions, ie Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, and adult after work programs such as Art With Elders & San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, working with both hobbyist and professional artists. Using each student’s nature, she is able to help them find their unique style while giving them the confidence and skill to improve and continue on their personal works of art. Because Isis has been an exhibition artist all her life, she also has hands on experience on how to survive the modern art world.
