  • TURANDOT Live from the Met in HD with English Subtitles!

    Saturday, October 12
    11:45am

    Teatro Angela Peralta

It is difficult to think of a more lavish and opulent production of an opera than Franco Zeffirelli’s staging of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, which the Italian director debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1987. From the moment the curtain rises on China’s Imperial City, the setting for the opera, the audience takes in the gilded, eye-popping set, replete with pagodas of red fire, dragons, gongs, lanterns, and pavilions.

Giacomo Puccini’s final masterpiece is a crowd pleaser, one of the most popular works in the opera repertoire, and unless you have been living in a cave, you have surely heard its signature tenor aria, “Nessun Dorma,” which captivated a global audience when Luciano Pavarotti sang it at the 1990 World Cup.

On Saturday, October 12, the Metropolitan Opera begins its 2019-2020 season of its Live in HD movie theater transmissions with the Zeffirelli production of Turandot, starring dramatic soprano Christine Goerke, bringing her fierce portrayal to the title role, with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium. Tenor Yusif Eyvazov is the mysterious prince Calàf, alongside soprano Eleonora Buratto as Liù and bass-baritone James Morris as Timur. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to more than 2,200 theaters in more than 70 countries worldwide.

One of those theaters is the Teatro Ángela Peralta, which will be presenting Turandot live, with subtitles in English, at 11:55 am (five minutes to noon) on October 12. (The estimated end time is 3pm.) The Peralta has been outfitted with an enormous screen that fills the entire stage, and an improved sound system. The HD of the series’ title stands for high definition, and the sharp-focus detail of the Met’s vast stage is a delight to the eye. And every note is coming to you live.

You would have to travel to a North American city to see the live transmission of Turandot with subtitles in English, and if you did, your ticket price would likely be around $34 U.S., about 660 pesos at today’s conversion rate. The ticket prices for the Met’s Live in HD at the Peralta are 500 pesos for orchestra and box seats; 350 pesos for the center of the first balcony; 200 pesos for the remainder of the first balcony; and a student price of 100 pesos for the second balcony.

You can purchase your reserved seats now by clicking boletocity.com; or with cash or credit/debit card at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.for purchase.
