Event Category: All Events, Entertainment, Musical Events, and Theatrical Events

  • It’s showtime! I have been having a blast being back on stage again with a theater class at El Sindicato. Now we’re getting ready to put on a Musical!!! For those of you that know me from California, you know how much I love musicals:)

This show is about a wedding in San Miguel de Allende. It ain’t Broadway, but it’s a fun show, and will be mostly in Spanish with some English mixed in to help you follow the plot if your Spanish is limited.

El Sindicato has played such an important part in making me feel more like San Miguel is my home and that I am part of the local (mostly Mexican) creative community here. Over the last year I’ve taken classes there in Theater, Jarana (like a Mexican ukelele) Singing, and Paper Mache.

So come out and see a show this weekend, support local (Mexican) artists, support El Sindicato, and come to a San Miguel de Allende wedding!!! It will cost you 150 pesos, will probably sell out, and is only playing this weekend.

    Saturday April 1st at 3pm and 7pm
    Sunday April 2nd at 6pm

The origin of the El Sindicato dates back to the early 1900s, when they began building the facilities of the textile factory “La Aurora”. In the recreational Street building number 4, the seat of its workers’ union was established, growing to more than 300 members. The home had a large auditorium and various facilities. The building was for many years as well as a meeting place, a social, cultural and recreational center for the families of workers and the public in general.

In the year 1995, after the closure of the factory, the management of the property to the Civil Association “El Recreo de San Miguel”, who today continues to govern the activities of the place he relented. It has been called “El Recreo”, “The Union”, “House of Performing Arts” and we now know as “The Syndicate – Alternative Cultural Space”. It has changed names several times throughout its history, have also addressed different people, but always with the common goal of bringing culture and art to the San Miguel community, as well as open doors to all artistic and cultural proposals of the community.

The Union is an alternative, independent and autonomous management of cultural space. Over time, through donations and fundraising events organized by various artists and friends of the Association, they have been improving the facilities of the site, which now consists of two rooms with hardwood floor, salon music, multi-purpose auditorium with capacity for 120 people and a literary cafe.
