Biography of Sergio Olivera Pointelin- Guitarist Born in Mexico City, on May 22, 1965, Sergio Olivera Pointelin began his guitar studies, in the Estudio de Arte Guitarrístico directed by the Maestro Manuel López Ramos, under the tutelage of Maestro Mario Beltrán del Río (Winner of the First Place in the International Guitar Competition of Paris, Radio France, 1969), developing courses of interpretation of Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music, in particular of the repertoire of Spanish music of the late nineteenth century and early of the 20th century like Isaac Albéniz, Francisco Tárrega, Manuel de Falla and Enrique Granados. Since 1995, he decides to learn flamenco guitar and under the tuition of maestros Raúl and Ricardo de Luna. As of 2012 he enters the studio of Maestro Gabriel Elizondo Prieto where he takes composition, interpretation and accompaniment workshops for dance and flamenco singing. He recently completed a specialization course in flamenco concert guitar with Maestro Rafael Cañizares in Barcelona.

Sergio Olivera Pointelin has given concerts in Mexico, France (Arbois et Pontarlier) and Germany (Heidelberg).

    The Concert

For the last 100 years, in the flamenco or gypsy music from Andalucia, in Spain, the guitar has evolved more than any other form of expression including the singing, dancing, and the indispensable hand clapping that give flamenco such an indistinguishable flavour. From a simple accompaniment instrument, more centered in the rhythmical functions, the guitar has evolved to become the central harmonic and improvisation tool for flamenco art and shows.

Thanks to the work of Paco de Lucia (1947-2014), and prior artists like Niño Ricardo (1904-1972) and Ramón Montoya (1880-1949), among others, the guitar was catapulted to
become a concert instrument known throughout the world. The technical virtuosity introduced and the new harmonic possibilities, make the guitar not only a “little orchestra”, as the great classical guitar master Andrés Segovia used to say, but make the guitar the most powerful and versatile solo instrument able to transmit from the softest tenderness, sadness, rage and fury, to the sublimest joy of life. The declaration and acknowledgement of flamenco as world intangible heritage by the UNESCO, since 2010, reminds us of the importance of this music tradition that keeps evolving and reminds us the importance to promote tolerance with migrant populations that have been over centuries persecuted and chased for their cultural differences or believes.

The repertoire for the concert at the San Miguel de Allende Public Library celebrates a mosaic of Spanish music with unique pieces by Manuel de Falla, the traditional flamenco of
Agustín Castellón (Sabicas), the indistinguishable flamenco flavour of Jerez de la Frontera
from Manuel Morao (Moraito), the revolutionary flamenco of Francisco Sánchez (Paco de
Lucía), and finally the flamenco made in Mexico by the young composer Gabriel Elizondo
    Prieto.
