  • Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra is Back!

    Inaugural Concert March 17

    Bellas Artes

    by Tim Hazell

I’m pleased to announce that our Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra is back as the official “Orchestra in Residence” at Bellas Artes with regular rehearsals and a new series of free concerts entitled, “Music Under the Arches.”  Not only will this be a year of great music, but a new accord with the historic Centro Cultural El Nigromante that will enrich the educational and cultural fabric of San Miguel!

After approval by new Bellas Artes Director Gerardo Rábago, our agreement was sent to Mexico City to undergo the “proceso juridico” that will make it valid for up to six years with a simple yearly renewal process.  For its inaugural “Under the Arches” concert, the thirty-three member orchestra has been busy rehearsing new additions to its repertoire in preparation for this special event on Sunday, March 17 at 12:30 pm on the historic Bellas Artes main floor patio.

This year, we have added  young professional talents from leading symphony orchestras and integrated their mentorship with top students from the Celaya Conservatory, Guanajuato and Queretaro University faculties of music.  The seasoned experience of the pros meets the youthful enthusiasm and energy of an emerging generation of concert artists!

Our program for the March 17 event will include masterworks such as the Coriolan Overture by Beethoven, the iconic second Andante movement, with its characteristic “clock” rhythm from Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony #101, Sibelius’s dark northern mediation entitled Sad Waltz and Mozart’s ebullient Allegro Assai section from his #31 “Paris” Symphony.  There will also be a spirited short introduction by one of our talented quartets who will contribute music during the concert’s half-way point.

Beginning in April, we hope to present the second Adagio non Troppo movement from the richly textured Symphony #2 by Brahms and effervescent Petite Suite by Claude Debussy as fresh additions to our program.

Future performances in the “Music Under the Arches” series will integrate full-orchestra presentations and recitals by small ensembles that became such popular Sunday afternoon traditions with audiences of all ages last year.  Worthy of note are upcoming collaborations such as Mozart’s Concierto for piano and orchestra in C major No. 21, with renowned pianist Marta García Renart and a special Christmas event featuring the Coro Juveníl (Youth Chorus) de Bellas Artes under the direction of Maestro Rábago, teaming up with our chamber orchestra.

I’ve received a lot of inquiries about our current state of affairs and concerts and I’m very glad to announce that we are back.  I believe we are going to have our most dynamic and productive year yet!

The Pro Musica Youth Chamber Orchestra will be presenting “Music Under the Arches” as an ongoing series of free Sunday concerts for the remainder of 2019, with comfortable seating provided for the audience.  As always, there is no charge but voluntary donations are welcome.  Our inaugural concert event on Sunday, March 17 should attract returning aficionados and new fans alike.  Come early for a ringside seat!
