  • Jazz with a Mexican Flavor

    Friday, September 20th, 2019,
    8:00 pm

Auditorio Miguel Malo, Bellas Artes / El Nigromante Cultural Center,
    Hernández Macías 75

As usual in September, the consummation of the Independence of our Mexico is celebrated, initiated in Dolores (Gto.), very close to San Miguel, the dawn of September 16, 1810.

After a decade of armed conflicts between Mexico and Spain, the desired liberation of this wonderful country was achieved. It is for this reason that in the Patriot month various cultural events are held to commemorate this feat and what better than a concert with the most select of Mexican composers, such as:

Agustín Lara (1897), Álvaro Carrillo (1921), J. Alfredo Jiménez (1926), Armando Manzanero (1935).

The 4 Aces of Mexican popular music, Agustín, Álvaro, Alfredo and Armando will be performed in a Jazz style, in a similar manner of how the greatest Jazz players play the standards (eg: John Coltrane / My Favorite Things).

The music of these 4 giants has a great melodic-harmonic-lyrical quality and has transcended our borders impacting worldwide.

With a touch of improvisation as demanded by Jazz, Daniel Wong (piano), J.L. Chagoyan “Hopalong” (double bass) and Carlos de Aguinaga (drums), will share their musical arrangements with pieces such as: Farolito, Sabor a mi, El Andariego, A Rare World, This afternoon I saw rain, etc.

Hopalong and Daniel Wong met in 1988 in Mexico City, collaborating with the Big Band “Brass Explosion” of trombonist John Hagger, and hence a strong friendship based on the love of music, was born. They have given concerts performing their own compositions in the main forums of our country such as Bellas Artes, National Auditorium, Teatro de la Ciudad de Mexico, Sala Netzahualcóyotl etc.   This occasion will not be the exception as they will play pieces of their authorship.

On this evening maestro, Carlos Aguinaga on drums will be joining Daniel and Hopalong rounding off the concept of the Jazz trio, in the style of Bill Evans. The 3 musicians are of high artistic level and express their art with passion, seriousness and respect. This promises to be a memorable concert and a beautiful way to celebrate the independence of all Mexicans.

For all music lovers, the appointment is:

Friday, September 20 at 8:00 p.m., in the Miguel Malo Auditorium at Bellas Artes , Hernández Macías #75 (Center).

Tickets $250 available at Zenteno Bellas Artes Café, open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5:30pm.

This beautiful former monastery of La Concepción church was converted into a fine-arts school in 1938. Don’t miss the murals of Pedro Martínez, plus the Siqueiros Room, which features the extraordinary unfinished mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros (it plays with your mind – we won’t spoil the surprise). The rest of the gallery holds temporary exhibitions.   It is located less than 5 minutes from the main square in Street Hernandez Macias that parallels Hidalgo street which leads right in the Main Garden. It is walking through this beautiful area worth, visit its art galleries and get you some photos on your patio or in one of the arches of the first floor, but if you are thinking that the arts are your thing you can consider it as a study center for you because it is a nationally recognized school.

    Fees: $250.00 MXN
