The World-Touring Jazz/Rock Trio A Love Electric Will Perform One Night in San Miguel

Todd Clouser, a guitarist, singer and songwriter from Minneapolis, called “a fascinating musician” by National Public Radio, had an encounter in 2011 that changed his life. After making a name as a soloist and recording artist, he met two Mexican musicians, drummer Hernan Hecht and bassist Aaron Cruz. The desire to form a musical trio with Hecht and Cruz was so powerful that Clouser moved into an apartment in the Portales neighborhood of Mexico City, to live within a block of the drummer and bassist.

The trio they formed, A Love Electric, has since toured the world, recorded four albums, given over five hundred concerts, and received so many rave reviews that one hardly knows which ones to quote.

Here is a small sampling. “One of the most progressive and important groups of recent years” (La Jornada). “Blistering” (Prague Post). “A celebration of the creative spirit” (Minnesota Public Radio). “Impressive” (Time Out NYC). “Clouser is probably best classified as a jazz guitarist, but when you listen to his music, the funk and rock keep you on your toes” (Vintage Guitar Magazine). “The [Love Electric] trio played with the musical interplay and intensity found on Cream’s Wheels of Fire” (Jazz Times).

Now, thanks to San Miguel musical luminary Doug Robinson, A Love Electric is about to make its San Miguel debut, for a single performance, Wednesday, April 17, at 7pm, at the Teatro Angela Peralta. (Robinson will also be performing – more about that in a moment.) This is a reserved-seat event, and every one of the Peralta’s 429 seats will be specifically assigned to the ticket buyer. Tickets are 400 pesos for the Orchestra (Luneta) section and for the Boxes (Plateas); 250 pesos for the First Balcony (Palcos); and 150 pesos for the Second Balcony (Galerias).

Tickets are on sale at Boleto City, on the second floor of the Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and online at boletocity.com.

How does one describe the music of A Love Electric? A reviewer for the widely read internet music magazine The Waster put it this way: “It’s jazz and the blues; it’s funk and old-school 70s rock; its good, damn good music.” All three musicians in the trio are masters of their instruments. The Philadelphia Inquirer has called Clouser’s guitar playing a cross between Bill Frisell and Jimi Hendrix. Hernan Hecht is a Latin Grammy winner. The giant rock festival Vive Latino pronounced Aaron Cruz “an enormous bassist.”

The multi-instrumentalist Doug Robinson and his guitarist partner “Pancho” Lelo de Larrea, whom Robinson calls “one of Mexico City’s most exciting musicians,” will be featured in the concert as guest stars. Robinson will play keyboards. “We will perform our own set, and also join A Love Electric for some jamming that is sure to bring down the house,” Robinson says.
