“One of the most important Cuban pianists of his
generation to storm into the first decade of this century.” —
Pedro de la Hoz, music critic, Artecubano

Cuban-born classical pianist Fidel Leal, who makes his home in the United States, visited San Miguel last July and gave a single sold-out concert at the Bellas Artes. He performed Bach, Latin American repertoire, and the fiendishly difficult Sonata No. 7 in B flat by Serge Prokofiev. The critic for The Music Salon called it “the best piano recital” in San Miguel in recent memory.

Leal gave his concert as a benefit for Libros para Todos, a nonprofit organization that seeks to inspire children in Mexico to read more, particularly those children and young adults residing in rural communities where access to books is limited. (For more information, visit makingreaders.org.) The series, held quasi-monthly, always employs the Bellas Artes’ nine-foot Steinway concert grand as a solo or ensemble instrument, and has developed a reputation for excellence.

It has been the policy of Steinway Series that no artist gives more than one concert per season — but an exception is being made for Leal.

On Tuesday, November 20, at 7pm, Leal returns to the Bellas Artes, Hernández Macias 75, for a single concert that will feature one of the monuments of the piano repertoire, Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 111, a work that musicians hold in reverent awe (pianist András Schiff calls it “one of the wonders of mankind”).
