  • Dwight Blake
    Headliner/Recording Artist,
    in “Piano Men”

    Thur.,  Feb. 6,  7pm

    Fri.,  Feb. 7,  7pm

    Bellas Artes

Dwight Blake is an international touring and recording artist born in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  His San Miguel debut concert, Memories of Motown, was held at the San Miguel Playhouse last March, and at the final performance, Dwight had more than two-thirds of the audience dancing on stage with him.

Dwight is a commanding performer on his own, a superb singer and pianist, prompting Steinway Series, the quasi-monthly piano-based concert series held at Bellas Artes, to invite him as a solo act.

On Thursday, February 6, and Friday, February 7, Dwight will perform his show Piano Men, as this year’s first installment of the Steinway Series, a quasi-monthly series of concerts at the Miguel Malo auditorium at Bellas Artes, featuring the auditorium’s nine-foot Steinway D concert grand piano.  All Steinway Series concerts benefit Libros para Todos, a nonprofit reading initiative for Mexican children. The series has gained a reputation for excellence.  Last year’s concerts included performers such as Mark Hartman, Lady Zen, Ken Bichel, David Mendoza, and Alberto Macedo & Pablo Buniak.

Dwight’s Piano Men show will feature him performing songs by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Ray Charles, Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, and Barry Manilow. His repertoire of songs is so vast that as this bulletin was being written, Dwight had provided a list of about three dozen songs he will choose from, just by those pianist singer/songwriters. He may very likely toss in a Jerry Lee Lewis or Beatles song.

Among the songs most likely to be heard in the program are “Superstition” (Stevie Wonder); “Georgia on My Mind” (Ray Charles); “Bennie and the Jets” (Elton John); and “Easy” (Lionel Richie). But that’s just a smattering.

Blake has a silky and soulful voice that can extend from a Barry White baritone to a Philip Bailey soprano.  A music critic for the Vallarta Daily News, in Puerto Vallarta, where Dwight lives part of the year, wrote: “Dwight Blake’s fun, high-energy performances are always a hit, and audiences can’t help but get up and dance!”  His fellow musicians describe his shows as “tight,” a sincere tribute in a field too often beset with laziness and inattention to detail. Blake’s vocal style was honed in the church, but his finishing school was a rigorous succession of bookings on luxury cruise ships and Las Vegas venues such as the Golden Nugget and the Mirage.

Both shows are at 7pm, and reserved-seat tickets are 400, 300, and 200 pesos.

Tickets are available at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm; and online at boletocity.com, or by clicking either of the “Buy Tickets Online” buttons in this email message.
