The Cracks in the Bell – Part I
Writing workshops in October, will explore multiple short forms of writing to mark difficult losses and transitions we have experienced or anticipate, including separation, moving, aging and death; loss of place or community, professional or personal identity.
The goal is for each participant to produce one solid draft of a story or poem per week, for personal satisfaction or publication. No writing experience is necessary.
Each week, samples of fine writing will be used to demonstrate literary techniques and as models for our own work, to elicit ideas, memories, and inspire us to write with greater honesty and clarity. We will record and transform our thoughts and experiences into memorable poetry or prose—or a hybrid form. We will talk about ways we can dive below the surface to honor and enrich a story.
We will read and examine short forms of creative nonfiction and poetry by notable writers, including: Martín Espada, Natalie Diaz, Paul Kalanithi, Alison K. Williams, Joyce Maynard, Joy Harjo, V. P. Loggins, Marjorie Williams, and Glenis Redmond.
The intent is to create a safe environment for participants to share their work and receive positive feedback. Sharing is optional and encouraged. We will listen to the silence, to each other, and to our selves.
The Cracks in the Bell Workshop – Part II will meet on November 7, 14, 21.
Workshops are led by Maia Williams, co-director of the international San Miguel Writers’ Conference, founder of San Miguel’s Poetry Café Bellas Artes, and publisher of Crossroads: La Vida Creative en San Miguel de Allende. Courses are conducted in English. Seating is limited. Pre-register for Part I or Part II, or ask a question via email: wownowmx@gmail.com – Subject: Write! (Part I, Part II, or Both)
