“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you.”

    – Maya Angelou

The San Miguel Literary Sala has four excellent workshops this month presented by outstanding faculty with years of successful writing and marketing careers.

Dinty W. Moore presents Memoir in Small Doses: The Brilliance of Writing Briefly. Flash prose, writing in 1000-word chunks, teaches you the “cooking” skills for a longer book-length banquet. With in-class writing prompts and review of brilliant examples of flash prose, you will learn how to focus and complete your larger project. Concise vivid blocks of scene, characterization, dialogue, and description are your best building materials for flash publication or for a book. September 20 & 22, 3:00–4:30 pm CDT

Be a Rebel! Break all the rules of writing fiction in this workshop taught by Terry Persun, Breaking the Rules of Fiction. Character building, conflict development, point of view, scene and setting, and style, are all important elements of writing. In this workshop you will be surprised to learn how to do things differently to create a well-crafted story. Understanding the rules of fiction before you break them is key to being an artist as well as a craftsman. September 20 & 22, 5:30–7:00 PM CDT

Tell Me a Story: Evoking Narrative in Poetry & Vignette. Michael Bazzett will facilitate exploration of how story is evoked in other modes, other than straight narrative, framing thought as fable, myth, or borrowing classic joke structures, where punchlines deliver lyric implosion instead of comic explosion. Students will participate in playful exercises and explore how honoring the narrative impulse creates leaner writing, and both delights and engages audiences. September 21 & 23, 3:00–4:30 PM CDT

In this introductory how-to class, What’s Your Author Brand? facilitated by Joe Gillard, you’ll learn what an author brand is and how it’s used in the industry to make hugely successful writing careers, and most importantly, help readers connect with your work. Learn why you need to create your author brand or further develop the one you have. Whether you’re a poet, a humorist, a biographer, a memoirist, a graphic novelist, an essayist, a science writer, or romance novelist, this class will be fun and will help you! September 21 & 23, 5:30–7:00 PM CDT

And don’t miss the San Miguel Literary Sala Distinguished Speakers Series: A New History of the Aztecs with Camilla Townsend and Gerry Helferich on September 19, 6:00–7:30 PM CDT. Sliding scale $5–50, pay what you would like.
