San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival

    Is for Readers and Writers

    By Susan Page

The extraordinary ensemble of keynote speakers for this year’s literary extravaganza is only the beginning of the special events at this year’s San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival. The keynoters alone are exciting. For us to meet in person the author of the current top-selling beloved novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, will be a memorable event. Delia Owens has achieved the “triple crown” of the literary world by having sold more than one million books in each of three formats: digital, audio, and print — and with her debut novel! Two of our other keynoters, Ian Williams and Tommy Orange, are also presenting debut, prize-winning novels.

    Writing Skills Workshops

For writers, one of the best experiences any beginning or mid-career writer could hope for are the Saturday three-hour Intensives with some of the most seasoned and beloved teachers available today, on topics like voice and style, character and plot (“Which is more important? Character or plot? Answer: Which side of a dollar bill is more valuable.” – David Corbett), editing, building blocks of a novel, dialogue as action, writing for change, book publicity, and other topics. And for writers wanting even more depth, the five-day, post-Conference workshops are solid gold. Your writing project will leap light-years ahead when you immerse yourself in it with a coach who has helped many writers achieve success. These teachers are experts at seeing what your project needs, at building on your personal writing strengths, and on moving you away from ineffective directions or pitfalls.

Conference Packages are the Best Option

Although tickets to individual events are available, we encourage you to consider purchasing a Conference Package. Our Pleasures of Reading package includes all the keynote speakers, some special events, but not the writing skills workshops. If you purchase any package, for you, nothing will be sold out! Our writers’ package includes all the writing skills workshops. And the Whole Enchilada includes two three-hour Intensives, for writers thirsty for new inspiration, ideas, and skills.

    Fifteenth Anniversary Events

This year, we are celebrating our Fifteenth Anniversary. The celebration starts with our brand new anthology, 15: Celebrating Fifteen Years of Literary Excellence from the San Miguel Writers’ Conference, containing stories from many of our past keynote speakers including Barbara Kingsolver, Margaret Atwood, Louis Urrea, Calvin Trillin, and many other celebrity names. It’s available in the Conference Bookstore and at the festive Publication Party Sunday morning, February 16 at 11:00 in the Real de Minas ballroom. And for the best party of the decade, our very own quinceañera on Friday evening, February 14 at 8:00 PM, at the Real de Minas, will break all previous fiesta records for fun and surprises. This year’s festival is our very own coming of age, fifteenth birthday party in the best Mexican tradition. We are not telling all the surprises, but if you miss it, you’ll probably regret it, as it will be the talk of the town.
