Three Multi-Genre Poets to Read at October Poetry Café

    by Catherine Marenghi

Three poets whose writing spans multiple genres will read at the Poetry Café at Bellas Artes on October 24 at 5:00 PM.

Steven Heighton’s most recent books are The Waking Comes Late, which received the 2016 Governor General’s Award for Poetry, and The Nightingale Won’t Let You Sleep, a novel. His 2007 novel Afterlands has appeared in six countries, was a New York Times Book Review editors’ choice, and was cited on year-end lists in the U.S., the UK, and Canada. A film adaptation is in pre-production. His short fiction and poetry have received four gold National Magazine Awards and have appeared in London Review of Books, Best English Stories, Poetry, Best American Poetry, Tin House, TLR, Agni, Best American Mystery Stories, Zoetrope, London Magazine, New England Review, and Best Canadian Poetry. In 2019 Steven was a finalist for Ireland’s Moth Poetry Prize, the largest award of its kind for a single poem. He is also an occasional fiction reviewer for the New York Times Book Review.

Neysa King received a master’s degree in global history, studying genocide and human rights, before moving into the technology field. Currently she is COO of Vitro Technology, an Austin tech startup. Throughout her varied career, she has made it a priority to capture her experiences in poetry, journalism, and short stories. She first gained an audience for her writing with “Dissertation to Dirt,” a blog about young farmers and food politics. Her forthcoming first book, Codependent Love Letter, is a poetic exploration of love and human connection in the midst of trauma. In her narrative poetry, she explores how depression, anger, and isolation can lead to self-discovery. Neysa has been published in Slippery Elm Literary Journal, Chaleur Magazine, The San Antonio Review, The Huffington Post, and others. She lives and writes in Austin, Texas.

Gaia Schilke is a poet and visual artist who has lived in San Miguel de Allende since 2016, and previously lived in Costa Rica. Gaia grew up in Connecticut and has lived in Manhattan and Rhode Island before becoming a dedicated expat. A spoken word poet in the 80s and 90s in New York City, Gaia has published poetry in numerous literary journals and books internationally. Her book of illustrated poems and stories, From the Margin (Stray Dog Press) was published in 1997. Schilke was curator of a reading series at The Knitting Factory and The Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York, and co-editor of the multicultural arts magazine A Gathering of the Tribes. The title of her new book, A Coney Island State of Mind, is in homage to both Henry Miller and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The book contains new and selected poetry, illustrations, and illustrated poetry from 1990-2019.

Founded in January 2016, Poetry Café Bellas Artes typically meets the third Thursday, September through April. The all-volunteer organization presents local and visiting poets, both established and emerging, sharing their work in a casual setting.
