Writers’ Conference “Pleasures of Reading”
Special Package Price
By Susan Page
The San Miguel Writers’ Conference has achieved world-class status over the fifteen years it has been maturing. The keynote speakers who will be right here in San Miguel for our 2020 event, February 12 to 16, 2020, are among the most celebrated speakers we have ever presented all at once. They include Tommy Orange and Delia Owens, both of whom have appeared consistently on bestseller lists for more than a year; U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera; Canada’s Madeleine Thien, recipient of both the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s award; Mexico’s beloved Rosa Beltran; and Valeria Luiselli, whose novel Lost Children Archive has appeared on the “best books of 2019” lists of the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time Magazine, and Vanity Fair. It was also nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize.
“Pleasures of Reading” Package
The February event is as much a “Literary Festival” as it is a “Writers’ Conference.” Since many San Miguel residents and snowbirds are avid readers but not necessarily writers, we have created a package called “The Pleasures of Reading,” designed to allow readers to obtain tickets to all of the keynote speeches and several of the Special Events, even when tickets to individual events have sold out. At only $295 usd, the package makes it easy for local residents to avoid missing the rare opportunity to hear all of these legendary literary icons, along with these fun Special Events:
Anthology Publication Party
In a celebration of fifteen years of literary excellence from the San Miguel Writers’ Conference, we are thrilled to announce the publication of an extraordinary anthology containing works by many of our former keynote speakers such as Margaret Atwood, Barbara Kingsolver, Luis Urrea, Calvin Trillin, Ellen Bass, Rita Dove, and many more. The Pleasures of Reading package includes the gala Publication Party on Sunday morning of the Conference, February 16 at 11:00 AM.
Giller Prize Winner to Appear at our Conference
In a major affirmation of our Conference, Canada’s Giller Foundation invited us to present the 2019 Giller Prize winner at our Conference. The recently announce winner, the amazing Ian Williams, will appear in an on-stage interview with celebrated Canadian writer Merilyn Simonds. Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 PM.
Literary Death Match
This event was so raved about last year, we are bringing it back! In this literary game show, four writers will compete in a gripping and wildly entertaining “read-off,” critiqued by three celebrity judges. Friday, February 14 at 2:00 PM.
Global Migration: People and Their Stories
Three of our keynote speakers address the critical topic of migrants and refugees from their unique perspectives. They will discuss the challenges of capturing the complexities of anguish, loss, and hope on the page. Saturday, February 15 at 1:00 PM.
