Urgent Issues and Enduring Truths: San Miguel PEN’s 2019 Winter Lecture Series:

    By Signe Hammer

Whether you take the long view or the short, the 33rd annual San Miguel PEN Winter Lecture Series contains riches for all. Talks will address such contemporary issues as Central American migrants, the US/Mexico border, being a Latina journalist in Trump’s America and the state of the press in Mexico. They will also explore some enduring truths in the weaving arts of San Miguel, the Mesoamerican codices (books by indigenous peoples), and the roots of the Latin American character.

A new feature this year is supertitles in Spanish or English, to provide a truly bilingual experience. Each talk will feature a Q&A, and several speakers will have books to sell. The audience is invited to continue on to dinner afterward with the presenters.

The series opens on January 15 with Pastor Ignacio Martínez Ramírez, founder and director of Abba Albergue in Celaya, a shelter now overflowing with Central American migrants. He will be introduced by Sher Davidson of the Latin American Relief Fund, a supporter of Abba Albergue.

On January 22nd, Maria Hinojosa, Emmy-award-winning news anchor, reporter and producer, reports on finding her voice as a journalist, a Mexican immigrant, and a Latina in Trump’s America, where journalists have been called “enemies of the people.”

Andrew Paxman returns on January 29th to offer some surprising news about the state of the press in Mexico, where he has worked both as a journalist and a journalism teacher.

On February 5, Francisco Cantú, author of The Line Becomes a River: a Chronicle of the Border, and a former US Border Patrol agent, will consider the US / Mexico border as geography, psychology and policy.

Few know that San Miguel has been a center of weaving arts for two centuries. After a Writers’ Conference break, on February 19 weaving artist Elizabeth Starčević and Don Agapito Jiménez, master weaver and teacher, will discuss weaving then and now, with original work by both presenters.

Next, on February 26, John Phillip Santos, author, journalist, poet, and TV writer and producer, will delve into the enduring themes of migration and mestizaje in the codices of Mesoamerica.

And finally, on March 5, Marie Arana, Peruvian-American author, most recently, of a critically acclaimed biography of Simón Bolívar, will explore three driving forces shaping the Latin American character: exploitation, violence and religion.

San Miguel PEN is a chapter of PEN International, the organization of writers that fights for freedom of expression around the world. The 150-peso admission helps fund local activities and includes a free glass of wine with dinner after the event at Vivali’s, across the street from the Bellas Artes at Hernandez Macias 66. Tickets will be available at Ticket Central in the Biblioteca or at the door. For more information, visit our website at sanmiguelpen.com.

    Our Programs:

The PEN Writers in Prison Committee has been a focus of the San Miguel center for over 20 years. In 2002 San Miguel hosted the PEN Writers in Prison Committee’s international conference. This work involves answering countless calls for emergency action to aid those in legal trouble for their writing, including prison and threats of death. San Miguel PEN is also active in International PEN’s Women Writers Committee, its Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee, and the PEN Iberoamerican Foundation (a regional organization). San Miguel PEN sponsors local literary programs and a local scholarship program that helps Mexican children with limited financial resources stay in school. It participates in major Mexican literary events, such as the enormous yearly Feria Internacional del Libro in Guadalajara. PEN members travel at their own expense to represent the group at the United Nations and at international conferences. San Miguel PEN sponsors an annual Winter Lecture Series to fund local activities and help support the international organization. Contact us HERE.
