  • Author Paul Smart, currently of Guanajuato and formerly based in the Hudson Valley area of New York state in the U.S., will be reading from his new pandemic memoir With Different Eyes: A Covid Waltz in Words & Images.

Created with 24 evocative paintings by noted filmmaker Richard Kroehling, designed by San Miguel’s own Anja Aronska, and printed in Mexico at the legendary Grafica Premier in Toluca, the book is a tactile means towards cartharsis of and from recent events.  With Different Eyes began life as a daily blog written and published through the first five months of Covid, which included the racial reckoning following George Floyd’s murder, and the raucous lead-up to the 2020 election. It was honed to include the personal upheavals we have all gone through — with families and memories, friends and communities – to demonstrate the therapeutic good we can all gain from recent experiences.

Smart will be reading in front of a filmed exploration of Kroehling’s paintings, and an emotionally evocative sound montage created by the filmmaker/painting.

Following the half hour presebtation, Smart will be joined by the book’s designer Anja Aronska, with a q & a moderated by Francisco Peyret of Atención San Miguel.

Copies of With Different Eyes: A Covid Waltz in Words & Images will be on sale at the event for a per copy price of $600 pesos
