A Latina Journalist Finds her Voice in Trump’s America

    By Signe Hammer

Maria Hinojosa has been crossing borders her entire life. Born in Mexico City and raised in Chicago, Hinojosa has borne witness to 50 years of immigration and immigration policy in the US and Mexico. On Tuesday, January 22, at 6pm in the second-floor auditorium at the Bellas Artes, she will share with us her own experience as a journalist, a Mexican immigrant and a Latina in Trump’s America.

In an extraordinarily personal and impassioned speech, Hinojosa shows how her own story of arriving in the US as an infant resonates with the treatment of immigrants at the border today. US policy on immigrants from Mexico has been based on denying their humanity, not for months or years but for decades, while journalists like Hinojosa have for years been disparaged for attempting to reveal the truth. Only now, with the revelations of the tearing apart of families and the incarceration of children, has the reality begun to be seen and acknowledged.

Hinojosa examines the many paradoxes of Mexican-American relations today: the two countries are closer than ever, yet so very distant. In the US, Latinas are courted for their power as consumers, while being subject to “the most direct anti-Latino racism the country has seen” since the 1930s. Yet American women of Latin American descent are making themselves heard on many fronts.

As a Mexican-American and a woman journalist, Hinojosa asks her Mexican compatriots to teach her and other journalists how to deal with an authoritarian government, its propaganda and state violence.

Maria Hinojosa’s nearly 30-year career as a journalist and news anchor includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN, and NPR. As the anchor and Executive Producer of both the long-running, NPR-distributed, Peabody Award-winning show Latino USA, and PBS’s America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, she has informed millions about the changing cultural and political landscape.

Hinojosa is founder, President and CEO of The Futuro Media Group, an independent, nonprofit multimedia journalism organization. In 2016, she became the host of In The Thick, the company’s digital political podcast, and Humanizing America, a video series that deconstructs stereotypes. She is also a contributor to the long-running news program CBS Sunday Morning, and a frequent guest on MSNBC.

Hinojosa became an American journalist because she was inspired by Mexican women journalists. Her return to deliver this speech in Mexico is an attempt to close the circle.

By the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa.
