  • Talk: Bicycling Europe at Sixty

    Wed, Jan 23,   5pm

    Teatro Santa Ana

    By Katrina and David Freeman

Think your bicycling/touring days are over?  Well, think again!  This past summer my husband David and I bicycled 3000 k though six European countries – France, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.  This is the 9th international bike tour we’ve completed. Many of you have seen our previous slide shows over the years.  We are independent and don’t travel with a tour group;  rather we strike out on our own and see what fate has in store.  Dave and I agree that cycling Europe was most rewarding due to several factors.   1)  It is flat.  (We are both in our sixties now).  2)  It is safe.  3)  The campgrounds are modern and efficient or Air bnbs are plentiful.  4)   The countries have such a diversity of culture to explore.  5)  It seems there are more bike lanes than roads in Europe ……and therefore…… a biker’s paradise!

There are some notable changes in biking Europe from say twenty years ago.  First there is the GPS which makes navigation much easier.  The electric bicycle is a common sight to see on bike lanes now.   Those with physical challenges or advanced age can get out to travel or just shop.   We also met a number of bikers who carried very little gear, opted to stay each night in a hotel or B&B, and take all their meals in cafes and restaurants.

There is a saying that when traveling especially by boat or bike, the journey is the destination.   The bicycle allows one to slow down and explore the out of way places with more leisure.   It also gives an opportunity to meet other travelers who share their discoveries.  Many a time we changed our course by a chance meeting and the words, “You gotta go here….”  In our presentations we like to educate fellow explorers on how to organize and implement travel by bike.  It’s also an opportunity for the more traditional traveler to learn about a country from a different perspective.  We consider ourselves “ground experts” now after biking the three month trek.  After the presentation there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

So come join us on Wednesday, Jan. 23rd from 5pm – 6:30 at the Santa Ana Theatre and learn about our adventures in Europe.   It will be a lot of fun!   Also by attending you will be helping Tom Frazee, a friend and 40 year resident of San Miguel.  All proceeds go to him as he is in need of a medical procedure.
